Would you turn down a job offer because you were their second choice?

are you a woman?
unless you think you're objectively the most attractive lawyer in the country then you have to accept that someone that's at least better than you on paper might go for the same job.

Who cares? Almost every job I’ve ever gotten I’ve been pretty far down the list, and every single of them has ended up great for the employer and everyone quickly realized what a great choice “they” made. Interviewing skills are just all about likability over a 30 minute cold call. Totally different skill set than actual work. I don’t blame people for preferring to go with the cute chick with big tits.

Either (i) the person came off as better for the job in 30 minute interviews that had nothing to do with the job - in which case, who gives a shit or (ii) the person had a way better resume - in which case, who gives a shit.
Interviewing is beyond stupid. You should save these slights for promotions or shit whree the people actually know you.

you know, I think you do step into marginally higher risk in a situation where you're second choice vs first. that said, there are so many unknown variables - eg it could've been an influential person at the company who preferred the other candidate, and it turns out you won't actually work with this person much anyway. once you're on board it's unlikely they'd cut you to find someone they like 1% better or whatever, and you'll show them you can do the work.
if you're excited about the company, 20% is still a fine raise.
is this remote or in person, are you changing cities? and out the approx comp, is public or private stock a meaningful part of it?

No because it doesn’t mean people had reservations about you. Can often mean there was a big time stud they were hoping for but he turned them down for Wachtell/Blackstone/Meta
Now if they took 6 weeks to get back to you, yes avoid. Someone didn’t like you.

What do you mean about taking 6 weeks to get back to me? Why is that a sign of someone not liking me. The whole process was much longer than that:
Week 1: Apply
Week 4: Screener
Week 6: Interview with hiring manager
Week 8: Interview with several team members
Week 12: Interview with Deputy GC, get offer, learn that they had already offered someone else who declined, presumably between weeks 7 and 11
Other than the gap between week's 8 and 12, nothing seemed particularly slow.

This is dumb. There are infinite nonsensical reasons why they picked the other person over you.
Like maybe she had nice breasts and the guy making the decision liked them, and she declined because he was creepy (i.e. short). This means nothing with respect to you and your success in the role (unless you also have nice breasts, in which case post pics).
