Yes. I think the most criteria should boil down to great success + a career you can't tell the history of the sport without substantially including. (But I also think Frank Gore should get in, and I might have a hard time making a case for him under #2. He was always just there, grinding away)

the dilfer thing is stupid. it's not just about having a sb. dilfer was 2001 ravens, right? that defense won the sb. whereas, manning's two super bowls (and there's a big difference between having two and one) were because of manning. he was sb mvp on both. and he beat tom brady including a patriots team that would have gone undefeated. his two sbs carry way a lot of weight. also, eli stats vs. dilfer stats can't be compared. eli had pretty decent stats. and he played for a long ass time and never got injured.

it's a shame how much superbowls matter when you're talking about individuals accolades.

if eli was a free agent heading into his superbowl season, what kind of salary could he command? which starters would be benched for him?

he was a middling QB in his prime, and if we're going talking GOAT he's not even in the top 25. if tyree's insane helmet catch didn't happen, which is how it would go 99% of the time, eli would be a bar trivia question like "did you know Peyton's brother was a QB in the NFL too?"

https://www.pro-football-reference.com/leaders/pass_rating_career_playoffs.htm

LEGENDARY

he's like bottom 3 passer rating of modern era QBs. below nick foles. just like him he was a middling qb his entire career. but unlike foles eli never "got hot" during the playoffs, as the stats show. he's flacco with another ring. if you ran the 2008 superbowl 10 times the pats would win 9.

HOF = *individual* excellence to me. i concede that reasonable minds can differ here. but there are always going to be middling players, even on dominant teams. and the giants were *never* dominant. not every starter during the 49ers run in the 80s is a HOFer.

what matters here is that eli was MVP of two super bowls against arguably the greatest team in the history of the sport. and eli was the MVP in both of those contests. I don't think an award gets anymore individualized than "MVP" but I agree that reasonable minds can differ here.

all players in the NFL are elite and capable of being an MVP of a single game. i don't think eli's performance was MVP caliber in either SB and they almost always give it to the winning QB. but even if it was, HOF = a career of top-tier, individual performance, MVP = one game.

reflecting on this thread i do think eli should be in the HOF and am mostly irate that he is a middling QB that gets elevated because of SB wins. but if we're gonna take "HOF" literally then he is notable and famous QB.

If everything else was equal, Eli Manning did not perform well enough over the course of his career to be in the HOF.

Eli never got a single MVP vote. The only stat he ever led the league in is interceptions (3 times). On a pure career performance level, he's below Brady, Peyton, Rodgers, Brees Stafford, Rivers, Big Ben, Russell Wilson, Tony Romo, Matt Ryan and healthy Andrew Luck and Carson Palmer.

But everything is not equal, and the HOF has to take into account the real world. Eli is part of the greatest NFL family in the history of the league. He was the #1 overall pick. He lucked his way into 2 Super Bowls, beating the greatest NFL player of all time in both of them. He has gaudy stats, even if he did it in an era where everyone has gaudy stats. He did it in NYC. And post-career he's went on to be one of the most popular football personalities.

Because of that, Eli is a Hall of Famer. But he's 2 very lucky catches in Super Bowls away from being labeled the most over-rated player of all time.

The super bowls were lucky but the first one was also a major event in the history of the sport because of the opponent and the season they had, and he threw an epic, theatrical pass to set up the win and generally played a clutch end of that game. So that one SB counts as like 3 and then he had another, which makes him like a Terry Bradshaw case (though Bradshaw also won some epic Super Bowls) and he’s objectively a much more skilled and productive QB than Bradshaw and like 85-90% of the QBs in the HOF that played before 1990.

Eli had an epic throw and end-of-game drive in his second Superbowl win too. A lot of people forget that. His throw to Manningham in the second one was actually better than the first. He should clearly be in the Hall.

CR helmet catch wasn’t impressive QB play it was just insanely consequential and historic. But I had conflated the Manningham throw and thought it was part of the end of the 2007 SB.

This is a persuasive argument. Having said that, as a fan of another NFC East team that played Eli twice a year, nobody was ever, ever scared of Eli. You never worried about him lighting it up, only wondered whether he'd throw enough ints to make it an easy win. I just never viewed him as a great player so I couldn't vote for the guy.

this is like journeyman nick foles being a HOFer though.

im conflicted. you play to win the game, so winning the most important game matters. but anyone, including a starting QB, can get carried to victory despite not being a top tier player.

eli sucked dick and the superbowls he won he didn't put the team on his back to win it. HOF is about individual talent. it's bonkers marino and eli are even in the same conversation.

Eli is nothing like Foles. Foles was an above avg backup QB that was able to take the keys to a very very good team and win a SB. Eli was a career starting QB for many mediocre/shitty Giants teams including the one that managed to beat arguably the best NFL team of all time in the super bowl. and he managed to get a second ring off the same group of assholes just to prove it wasn't a total fluke. he belongs in the HOF

a critical point is that the NFL HOF isnt MLB. MLB hof has a tradition of being rigorous. every other major sport HOF is watered down flame, and eli is no worse than plenty of other flame nfl hof'ers.

Objectively: no.

With a different name or without helmet catch: no.

I think he’ll make it and I can see the argument for it, but he absolutely does not deserve to be a first-ballot HOFer.
