It's also where Schwinn made most of their old bikes, and Trek is located just a few hours away in Wisconsin, so there's a baseline level of bike geekery you don't find in other cities.
Bike theft is also super easy and super common. It takes minimal effort to get in the game. It helps if you're nocturnal, but it's not necessary.
But the main thing is you don't have to go far to re-sell the bikes or part them out or whatever, because there's an annual "Bike Swap" up in Madison, WI where people overpay for used bikes. The secret is to time your actions around the Bike Swap to maximize your takehome from that one event. It's like taxes - you only have to do it once a year. |
