There is a lot of high quality indie music out there

The difference is that you have to actually go looking for it instead of having it shoved down your gullet as you upturn the banquet table with your piles of shekels. This is how it was for most of human history and even for a large part of the more celebrated as "culturally flourishing" years of modernity

There is indie country

I saw a couple of Heart-type female country singers at a basement bar thing somewhere in the NW not too long ago. It was quite good, and I'm not a huge fan of the genre, but the good examples are easy to appreciate

Few dislike Johnny Cash or Waylon Jennings ime

Heart had strong folk rock (derived from country/bluegrass) groundings. Especially in the vocal stylings

None of the major hits were particularly of this genre but they had stuff deeper in their discography that made this more clear
