• Facial Manipulation Studies: Research by Ian Stephen and colleagues found that when participants adjusted images of faces on a masculinity–femininity axis to maximize attractiveness, they significantly reduced the masculinity of White faces, whereas Asian faces required less or no adjustment toward femininity. This indicates that Asian faces are naturally perceived as having more feminine or youthful baseline features.

• Neoteny (Infant-like Features): East Asian facial structures often feature characteristics such as a flatter midface profile, rounder or softer cheeks, smaller nose bridges, and smoother jawline contours. These traits are associated with neoteny—the retention of youthful, child-like physical traits into adulthood—which contributes to perceptions of high femininity.

• Gendered Race Perceptions: Psychological studies examining gendered race theories note that East Asian men and women are frequently rated as softer or less aggressively angular in bone structure compared to Caucasian, Black, or South Asian populations. However, facial hair and distinct regional bone structures (such as in Central or South Asia) can shift these perceptions toward more rugged or masculine profiles.
