If you’ve ever had a TTT summer associate (we used to hire them from the local LS as like a community-engagement thing), edge is about that quality.

I.e., you ask for research into a specific, somewhat nuanced topic, and it instead answers a different, more general, and easier-to-research question, almost always with complete disregard to what your litigation position/POV is (lot of “your case is irrecoverably doomed, sorry”-type answers).

Yes. The drawback is it often takes like 10 minutes. So you have to craft solid prompts. But it’s nice. I’ll hit it with a deep search and go back to work and toggle back 10-15 minutes later and be ready to blast someone else. Welcome to the new world

I used Chat GTP to help a friend draft a motion to dismiss a criminal complaint. My friend is charged with making phone calls with an “intent to annoy.” So we raised a first amendment challenge. I was pretty impressed with what Chat GTP spat out with some prompting. Scary for sure.

i have learned to not let it do research on it and its cites and statutes are wrong all the time.

however, if you feed it the cases and statutes and general arguments you want to make, it does a pretty good job of getting a lot of the way there, even comes up with some arguments I didn't think of a lot

I’m not a litigator so can’t speak to that but it’s amazing at research tranny stuff and market standards if you know what you’re talking about to begin with. My experience with AI is it essentially mirrors the person using it. If you’re a nutjob then it’s going to double down and turn you into an even insaner version of a nutjob. But if you know what you’re talking about it’s really powerful with some prompting and editing. And it will only get better. Eventually they’ll probably take out the bias toward the user or there will be paid people per industry segment feeding it the positions or whatever

it's weird because if you ask it to draft a research point the assertions it makes themselves are usually mostly accurate even when they're backed up by fake cases. so it still can be helpful to get you on the right track as long as you're sure to to never trust its cases (which just as often real cases that don't have anything to do with the point cited for.

Switched to Gemini from Claude, GPT-4o, Deepseek and even QWEN. Google models feel more efficient but it's only been a couple of weeks running them for debugging javascript, Python, and .NET blocks of code.

The above is for hobby projects though, for the law- it's hammer and chisel to the stone tablets.

Update: Incurred $75 in Gemini costs, but mostly from multi-model stuff...switching back to GPT-4o
