none of the pop culture from that year makes any sense in the context of anything that preceded or followed it. it was like a "fake year." like they had to add in an extra year before the Cold War ended in 1991, at the last minute.

The Iraq-Kuwait thing was pretty much the only thing that mattered in 1990, but it really penetrated the American Zeitgeist.
If you were there, you really knew the Cold War was over on account of that.
As far as pop culture goes, you had MC Hammer and the Dick Tracy movie.
Oh, and the fucking Simpsons dropped for good.
