I know the idea kinda rubs people the wrong way, but I'd love to get back to a plausible belief in the objectivity of officiating. Baseball seems like an easy one with cameras and sensors for strike zone and tags. Football seems trickier, but having a ton of cameras from various angles to see every player interaction, and maybe sensors in helmets and pads, there could be algorithms to figure out when a player is being held, when a qb hit is too late, etc

They’ll keep the human umpires but the AI will whisper all the calls

Football is the sport where officiating really bothers me. It's my favorite sport to watch, but there are probably 2-3 different penalties you could call on every single play. It just gives officials too much power to steer the game one way or another. And compounding the issue is all the money at stake for sports books. Too many incentives for bad actors

By the same token, then, a completely objective and all-seeing AI would slow every game to a crawl with endless penalties

Not necessarily. It would probably have some sort of "confidence" level like other AI, and you could set the sensitivity.

pro tennis has basically eliminated all the linesmen, and there's just one chair umpire instead of 10 linesmen
