The mind naturally corrects for minor perturbations in function by maintaining an active focus on external obligations and objectives. A father feels a moment of hopelessness, but reminds himself that he needs to care for his family and sets himself to the task; the moment passes and is forgotten.
Contemporary focus on "mental health" encourages fixation on any brief malfunction, which is precisely what the mind must not do if it is to correct itself. It's like riding a bicycle; one balances by looking ahead and focusing on where one wishes to travel, not by looking down at the wheels and pedals and wondering how one remains atop the contraption at all

It depends on the type of mental health people are trying to achieve. The people who spend all their time talking to therapists trying to work through their problems fall victim to what you are describing. They get caught up in narratives about their bad childhood or failed relationships and rarely move on. The mindfulness/meditation movement that treats the self and life narratives as fictions generated by the brain actually allows people to be more functional and just do what they need to do without emotional attachments.
