I watched The Thirteenth Floor (1999) tonight after it was recommended to me awhile back as a dissident film. I had not heard of it previously and it had pretty bad reviews (~30% positive on Rottentomatoes, 60% audience positive), but I actually liked it quite a bit. It came out the same year as The Matrix and deals with similar themes - the nature of our reality as simulation, but unlike The Matrix which deals with a level higher than ours, The Thirteenth Floor deals with a level both higher and lower than ours - our reality is in the middle. There’s also a kind of Truman Show moment where one realizes that this world is simulated by trying to drive beyond it’s limits and reaching the End of the World. The acting was fine (the main actor, who I had not heard of, missed his break when he turned down the role of Chandler Bing on Friends), the cinematography was okay ( a bit too dark and noir for my tastes), although the movie was more techno-centric than the gnostic elements featured in The Matrix. The pacing was solid. It would have been nice to question whether the upper layer of reality was real or not, whether there were layers higher, but I guess that idea didn’t make the film.
I would give it a solid 7/10 and recommend it, although I wouldn’t necessarily classify it as a “dissident” film.
