that computers have been useful in any way is solely the result of an inconceivably unlikely coincidence of pure random chance; an a.i. boltzmann brain. and the music could stop at any moment.

Other than the obvious possibility that you're flame, where are you trying to go with this?

If the Vikings had some theory about lightning and Thor, and were able to use that theory to land a space craft on an asteroid, that would seem to lend credibility to that theory.

If you feel perplexed by computers, maybe take a couple beginner EE/CS classes? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

There's a big secret in engineering that's revealed to you only if you've spent enough time in advanced electrical engineering courses: MOSFETs and other types of transistors found in processors don't actually behave as described in those circuit diagrams; their behavior is in a hazy state between randomness and determinacy, which can only be poorly approximated with existing mathematical tools. CPU speeds are "heuristic" values that don't actually measure anything, but rather they're based on arbitrary standards without any physical reference. The same is true for memory, storage, etc.

How is the vibration of the quartz in a CPU heuristic? It's like car RPM, but instead of a 360° turn of the wheels, a cpu clockspeed is it performing one full cycle of fetch-calc-send?

Edit: "To ensure proper operation of the CPU, the clock period is longer than the maximum time needed for all signals to propagate (move) through the CPU. In setting the clock period to a value well above the worst-case propagation delay, it is possible to design the entire CPU and the way it moves data around the "edges" of the rising and falling clock signal. This has the advantage of simplifying the CPU significantly, both from a design perspective and a component-count perspective. However, it also carries the disadvantage that the entire CPU must wait on its slowest elements, even though some portions of it are much faster. This limitation has largely been compensated for by various methods of increasing CPU parallelism"

Is that what you're talking about?

utter flame. circuit behavior is non linear sure but the idea that they dont behave as designed is flame (excluding manufacturing/design defects). inverters invert, PLLs generate clock signals, ADC/DAC convert signals etc etc

CPU speeds are rough approximations to indicate speed at which the chip operates. it does mean something. try running latest video games on pentium processors if they dont mean anything
