I keep hearing all these horror stories about 1100 apps for 2 spots and the like. I've always wondered how many of those were just totally outside of the realm of being competitive. People who are auto-dings but apply on a prayer and drive up the application numbers.

Care to hazard a (ballpark) guess at what proportion of your applicants are just flat-out unqualified?

At least 70 percent are ridiculously unqualified. It's ridiculous that a bottom 25% Hofstra student would spend a tremendous amount of money and time sending hundreds of paper applications.

2. major city?

3. how are you conducting the grade screening?

4. what are some other things that look good on a resume (that you see with reasonable frequency; i.e. no Rhodes Scholar etc.)

District this year, already have COA for next year.

Major city for both district and Circuit (same city.

If a candidate isn't a referral from a prof/partner who knows my judge, the cutoff is pretty simple: either top 10 percent from a T14 or top 5 percent from a local tier 1. There are still a ton of applicants who meet those criteria and we have to narrow it down even more before giving the resumes to the judge.

Law review is the most important. My judge worked for a while before law school, so he really is interested in candidates who have interesting pre-law work experience (not paralegals).

how do you know what top 10% is from a school that doesn't rank? do you just eyeball it and see whether they have 3/4 A range (or H) grades or above?

Most of the schools seem to let their students know if they are in the top 5-10 percent, because they note it on their resumes. Stanford and Harvard are harder to interpret, but you can kind of eyeball it. UVA is the weirdest one, because the transcripts don't have GPAs and none of the resumes include GPAs, even the ones with very good grades. I don't know if the school is instructing the students not to reveal their GPAs, but it makes it very difficult to evaluate (I don't really want to take the time to calculate someone's average).

If it's a transcript with all A's and A-'s, and the applicant is on LR, then it probably makes the cut. I think schools are hurting their students by encouraging them to hide the ball with their GPAs. It is a huge pain in the ass when you're trying to sort through 1,000 applications. I'm probably overscreening those schools.

Dunno. Personally I think it's douchey to put a GPA on your transcript, and potentially misleading if reviewers get lazy and just start going by the numbers. I'd think a person with a 3.6 but a heavy-ass course load is way more impressive, or at least interesting, than a 3.9 with lots of "pottery and the law"

if the recommender is one of your best buds and she says look bob, i know this kid, he's brilliant, personable, and does fantastic work, he's just not good in the exam situation (or whatever), and you'd really be doing yourself a disservice not to take him . . . i'd think that'd weigh pretty heavily.

of course, for the professor to actually do something like that, it does actually need to be the case that the student is worth going to bat for. it's an unlikely scenario, but it does happen occasionally.

I think it really depends on how the student compares to the typical applicant for that judge. If it's for Koz, or Posner, or Boudin or Edwards or Sentelle or somebody, I find it highly unlikely that a prof is going to make a serious phone call on behalf of a median student. But for D. Md. or E.D. Pa.? Meh.

Maybe the student didn't know how to take a law school exam during the first semester and bombed all of his classes except legal writing? Maybe the student got perfect grades in every one of his writing courses after that and started smoking every one of his classes once he found out how to take a law school exam?

That's what happened to me. I received a damn good recommendation and my Judge gave me a chance. My Judge recently told me that I am best researcher and writer he's ever had.

yeah, I get that part but all I'm trying to indicate is that it's not incredibly outlandish.

I don't actually understand why LR >>> 1 year of clerking. I'm writing my own work, not cite checking someone else's. If I was in the position of hiring CCN, top 1/4 + LR or CCN, top 1/4 + 1 year of clerking, I'd definitely hire the second one.

The problem, of course, is that judges could easily fill their spots by choosing the third option--all of the above. Most of the students I know who took DC clerkships also applied to appellate courts for the following year, especially ITE.

My judge would hire someone who wasn't on LR, but resumes from anyone who couldn't be bothered to do some random crap secondary journal are sorted out immediately. If you had something better to do during law school, you'll have something better to do than work in our chambers.

I guess. I don't think all judges see it that way but I get what you're saying; I don't doubt that you've got stacks of DCt clerks applying as well.

protip: if the judge is "full" on oscar, you're wasting your time by sending in an app. not even your B+ average from vanderbilt will make the judge reconsider her hiring decision

How many total clerkships have you fags been applying to?

Also, if a judge says his "preferred GPA" is top 15%, should I not even bother if I'm in between top 15% and 20%

When you consider that I only have a shot at 1/3 of them, if that, it doesn't seem like a lot.

isn't that because applications were just released to chambers, so everyone is on oscar looking at applications before calling people
