I started this thread because of the Tax LLM thread. Contrary to conventional wisdom, getting a niche & specialized LLM can be a good way to retool yourself (especially if you are fairly junior) and get back into a good job (eg. BIGLAW). Most here did NOT know that.

See above. If you have good credentials (I.e. top 14) and could get biglaw out of law school, then getting an llm to retool your practice can be a good move. Extra points if said llm is in a niche practice. Of course, networking like mad is the key.

the good thing about an llm is the networking potential. if you are out of law school and are fairly junior then your network might be fairly small. again if you do some bs llm then it won't help. doing something specialized can definitely help though. fwiw llms dont really do oci, so networking is really the only way. but llm alumni can be very avid supporters.

My program was not at a Top 5 law school, but it was still the best program in the country. I have top 10 ls credentials, summer associate offers, v10 experience. got laid off, used the llm to go into a different practice. there is still a need in said practice and i was able to land a biglaw job. not v10, but i make market. plus the firm is fairly well regarded for this practice.

Did you go to a t-14 ls? if not, an llm is unlikely to add much value. an llm cannot cover over a ttt jd. it can be good for retooling your skill set and extending your alumni base for networking. i have found llm alumni from my program to be much more supportive than my jd alumni. i suspect though that this is a function of size. my jd alumni probably get a number of emails and calls. my llm alums, not so much.

think about an llm but DO A LOT OF RESEARCH. also think HARD about attending if you have to take out debt. it is no guarantee. that said, in your situation it can be a potential way to retool and get back into the game. i must stress again DO YOUR RESEARCH AND DO NOT JUMP INTO AN LLM PROGRAM. most are worthless and will add nothing to your resume.

another dude in my program with a t-14 got a fed gov job. his position is a good one though and he should be able to move to private practice fairly easily in the future.

spending another $60K to get BACK into biglaw sounds like a booby prize, but if it makes you happy, congrats.

no debt to do it. i have increased my earnings from $0 to >$160K. Sounds good to me. when i am ready i will have options to leave biglaw. probably go fed government. oh and i spent about a bit under 40k all said and done. i dont live on campus and already had accomodations there. so not so much extra

its not like your earnings potential was $0 before the LLM. In any case it sounds like you have been at it for about a month. When youa re two years in and still love your job then you can say it was worth it.

part of me feels like the layoff was a blessing (not to mention the $90K) because it gave me an excuse to get away from a shitty industry that is getting much worse due to ITE - I dont mean stability - just QOL.

As I look now I kick myself for considering going back to biglaw. To spend another year tuition to do so would kill me.

If this is not flame, this guy probably did an LLM in Environmental Law. Outside of Tax, this is the only other feasible "niche speciality" available in BIGLAW.

The only other possibility is IP, but an LLM in IP is not going to do you much good without a science background. And if this guy was T10 with a science background, he probably could have gotten BIGLAW w/o the IP LLM.

Environmental could be useful as an LLM cause the laws in that area can be quite technical.

are employers still generally just looking at grades when considering hiring an llm?

they will look at grades but because llms are one year programs, if you graduate with a job you likely only have a semester of grades. that said, networking is more important than grades at this level. network early and network often. if i did not make it clear above. being in a school/llm environment is easier than if you are just out in the cold

so what does the llm show them? just that you've changed directions and that _this_ is the practice area that you're interested in.

does an llm limit you at all? if you get one are you locked into that area for all practical purposes?

depends on what you do during the year. if you do some practical classes in that field and do an internship (maybe do some other things like moot court, though i did not do that) it can work out. also if you want fed gov then you can apply for honors programs if there are agencies in your field that hire llms.

an llm definitely limits you. you are pretty much going to have to list your specialty on your resume and it will be an auto-ding for other practices. if you do a general llm you are wasting your time and money.

also if the practice group has a demand it can be a good signaling tool.
