I have a bunch of books that aren't worth much but these are my really nice ones. All first edition, first printing, first state. No dust jacket on Great Gatsby because that makes the book like 100-200K v. like 6-8K.

What’s the point of this? I love writing and highlighting in books, dog earing pages . I do this to old as well as new books. This seems like a sad hobby about status instead of reading .

I like reading them. Holding, smelling, and reading old books is a cool experience. I don't care if I mess them up a bit while reading them because I'll never sell them. Plus I'm going to make 20 million this year and I'll have a net worth over 50 million. Spending 200K on books or watches over a few years isn't going to change my life.

If you're really going to use the book, you buy a second reading copy (reprint, worn, &c.).

Not much status in today's world. People don't read books anymore.

People like possessing the real thing; the original make of something.

Why buy real wood furniture? A real gold ring? An original '69 Boss 429? An original Beatles LP?

The Penguin classic is about what's in the book; the first print is about the physical book itself. The two may or may not overlap.

Your Unique Traits:

- Obsessed with temporal ethics (Is greed timeless? Can you redeem a vampire?).

- Collects flawed treasures (Gatsby’s illusions, Long John Silver’s lies, Marley’s chains).

- Treats darkness as a mirror (Dracula’s shadows, the Time Traveller’s future, Meg Murry’s tesseract).

- Drawn to wild vs. civilized (Mowgli’s jungle, Scrooge’s London, Gatsby’s West Egg).

No. I just remember the story being read to me as a child - though it must have been an abridged version because it had pictures. The book was falling apart. I loved the story of how Rikki triumphs over evil and proves his value to the family. I thought that there was something noble in this valiant and selfless act of heroism.

Later on, when I was older I read more Kipling. Just So Stories first, then into the Jungle Book, and I really connected with the story of Rikki-Tikki-Tavi. As I got into my teen years that’s when I started to pick up Melville and Faulkner. It all runs throughout, the same themes, what it means to be a man, and yes this human experience we all share. I used to like reading and escaping into literature. It helped me at a time when I was in a dark and lonely place, brother.

One does not collect something to use it and we enjoy different items in different ways. The one thing I enjoy doing is giving things I have collected away to my children. Last night I gave my son a 1923 Monroe Doctrine commemorative half dollar. He seemed to like it but he wanted to sell it back to me.

Chess is coming really well. I have a grandmaster teaching me every week for the last couple months. I've gained about 300 ELO. I'm still worse than I was a few years ago. But my goal is to get to 1800-2000 by the end of the year. I'm getting pretty close to 1500. He also gives my 7 year old son lessons too and my son is close to 800 ELO.

I didn't do the mountaineering but I've been doing scuba instead. I got my open water, advanced, and rescue certifications and I have about 35 logged dives now. I'm doing my dry suit certification this weekend.

A lot, but less than one day's pay for me. It's the nicest copy I've seen. Almost no foxing, no work done to spine or hinges, and the gutters are perfect, and the pages are nice and bright.

Nice. Any Orwell, Huxley, or Nabokov?

With your money I'd invest in late 19th/early 20th century European paintings.

I have a first edition Animal Farm. It's pretty rare.

Why aren't you pursuing incunables? You're one of the few who have the means to delve into this area.

I've honestly never looked that closely at the authors or market since they're not something normal people can pursue.

They're something you'd likely acquire at auction, and not fixed price lists or Ebay or the like.

That’s one of the best adventure/revenge books in the entire canon. Congrats, brother! BIGTIME score! 🙌

Is it in two volumes? Engravings?
