Boards oldest poaster just turned 71, taking questions (here since PR days)

Date: October 13th, 2026 9:28 AM Author: Johnsmeyer You were all very helpful to me when I was younger and needed to go to law school. Many of you might remember me. You all talked me out of it and now I’m a successful business owner about to retire.
I wanted to share some insights on getting old. So you know when you’re young and get a sore throat? It bothers you and you hate it but you know it’ll go away. You just take a medication and it goes away in a day or so? Your 40’s and most of your 50’s are about the same. You think “wow getting old isn’t THAT bad.”
Then you’re 58 and you get a sore throat and it doesn’t go away. You’re like wait why isn’t it going away? My throat is scratchy and this is awful. You go to a doctor and he shrugs. He says welcome to getting old. You’re like “wait fuck this is NEVER going away?” He says nope.
First time something like this happens you’re basically going insane bc the pain is so bad and annoying. Then about a year later you basically accept it and focus on some other function. “At least I can still breathe.” Then your one nostril shuts down. You’re gasping for air. Same doctor shrugs and says “yup gonna be like that for the rest of your life.”
When I was 30 I always thought “wow I love life. People when they get old knowing it’s coming to an end must be terrified.” But the truth is you get older and you realize that’s the only way to escape the severe pain. Plus people you love start dying and you’re alone anyway.

Then at 58 poof permanent sore throat. |

I’m talking things that will drive you crazy. Headaches that last YEARS or burning piss. No one ever tells you the severe nagging that NEVER goes away and stays 24/7. You just learn to live with.
Ever meet a happy 92 year old who is just living normally? Ever wonder how they can be comfortable knowing they’re 100% going to be dead in maybe less than a year?
It’s because they know 1. There’s nothing left to live for and 2. Death is the only sure pain to make the headache go away.
