See eg Lippmann, Cronkite, Woodward, Robert McCormick, and guys like Safire and Bernstein who failed upward after flaming out of universities/journalism schools that were still prestige markers, partly because they demonstrated actual talent and unbridled ambition at a young age. The real difference in the 20th century was that mass media was just being invented, so it was growing rapidly and could attract a ton of capital and therefore incubate a broader swath of talent. I can’t remember if you’re one of those poasters who is dumb enough to believe that XO is really plugged in and at the vanguard of the zeitgeist and not just a place where massively Twitter brained alt righters repoast stuff they see on Twitter and elsewhere. American upper-middle-class culture (where the opportunities are) is now laced with cultural signifiers that are completely illegible unless you happen to have grown up in this class.
