I dropped it during act 2, just lost interest and too many plot holes / redditisms. Going to play through BG1/2 and IWD 1/2 again
QUESTION does the game improve after act 2

IMO the game is incredible throughout. But not going to challenge your lived experience.
Act 3 does have quite a few noteworthy fights, including Raphael (optional), an optional dragon, a bhaalspawn, a vampire lord, and obviously the Netherbrain.
However, since you level cap relatively early in Act 3, there may be a loss of motivation to finish all the side/companion quests, although it is certainly worth it to do so (if you care about best endings).

The voice acting and music are top notch. It feels like a complete world. The companions are well developed and their character arcs are very satisfying. The game rewards attention to detail and creativity. There is a sense that, even though this is the story of the main character, the entire world does not revolve around them. The choices that characters have to make don't necessarily adhere to a strict moral code, i.e. it's not just save the princess or kill the innocents. There are a lot of shades of gray.
Here is a sample scene that only triggers if very specific criteria are met, which I think is a great example of the immersiveness of the game:

BG3 plot holes and other crap stuff so far - Spoiler Alert -

OC donut steel NPCs - all of them except Shadowheart are supposed to be top killas but they are all level 1 or scaled to party level, e.g.
Karlach - she spent 10 (ten) years in the blood war as a tier one shotcaller in Avernus, but is whiny and very sensitive. Also she's a level 1 barbarian
Wyll - big time monster hunter who hunts fiends in Avernus but is a shitty level 1 warlock who struggles to kill a 9 hp goblin in the first fight you meet him in
Halsin - druid who runs a grove but he's strictly scaled to your party's level and he's also a weird sex pest. Also it is weird to have him and Jaheira both as recruitable, two good druids. Having a choice between the shadow druid and Jaheira would have made more sense
Gale - he is one of the most powerful wizards in Faerun and was Mystra's consort but starts off level 1
Jaheira - I haven't played enough to hear what her deal was with the bhaalspawn PC from the first two games, but if she canonically finished BG1 in your party with Khalid then she should start at least level 8/9, and then since then there's been a century or so of her running stuff for the Harpers in baldur's gate, but instead she is like level 4 or 5 in Bg3
Plot hole - the cult of the absolute - by all outward appearances this is yet another mindflayer cult. Senior wizards like Elminster or senior druids like Halsin should be aware of many similar mindflayer cults which have been purged in Faerun's history. Instead these very senior characters are befuddled and go on about how this has never happened before and is an existential threat.
Plot hole - Withers - this is some weird pan-dimensional undead entity and everyone just takes it for granted that he hangs out at your place.
The portals - are they ever explained?
Ketheric - he is essentially a lich but has gone completely unnoticed and unmolested in the century since he was "vanquished".
The adamantium forge - why didn't the duergar figure out the jumping puzzle to get to the forge? why wouldn't they be 100% focused on that instead of doing stupid shit for the drow? They are obviously very interested in mithril and understand its value and utility
Act 2 - this area is horrible and one note, with a bunch of goofy Dark Souls-lifted bosses and design
Lae'zel - you can steal the Gith egg and sell it to that old broad and she doesn't care, despite howling about how she's going to kill the woman for even suggesting it. Also you can kill every last gith in the creche and it doesn't bother her at all, but when shadowheart bugs her they flip out and fight to the death
Horrible romance and extremely horny npcs - this was awful and intrusive. it was weird how everyone wanted to fuck within a day of meeting up and shows the malignant influence of VNs in RPG writing
Items were almost all underwhelming and generally just replicated some kind of spell effect on a long or short rest cool down
A lot of Telltalle-style false choices, where you get cosmetic reactivity to your choice but the game reconverges on one or two branches
Why would Ketheric, who is essentially a lich who has led multiple genocidal campaigns, allow himself to get talked into giving up because of his lesbian daughter? totally bonkers
The asset reuse in second act is heavy handed, like the temple of shar tilesets from the underdark to the nightsong gauntlet
Why did the refugees wander into the Act 2 deathzone? wouldn't literally everyone know after 100 years that this was a complete no-go area? There was really NOWHERE else they could go? Like they're on the sword coast, they can't just build a raft and raft down the coast?
Why didn't ketheric's daughter age in the intervening time from him getting squashed the first time?
Why is the inn in Act 2 still intact and pristine after all that time? Was ketheric's daughter just hanging out on the upper floor projecting her Selune aura and twiddling her thumbs?

Some of this is fair but some of this is petty griping.
Withers is the forgotten God Jergal, this is made pretty clear if you explore/read books laying around.
The Gith egg - this behavior is explained.
Romances - wish they could just be turned off in general, and deifnitely a heavy dose of horniness/pansexuality. But overall not a huge detraction for me.
The shoe-horned appearances by iconic characters from the prior Baldur's Gate games is probably the weakest part of the game. Agree that Jaheira canonically should be Level 9, minimum, and assuming that BG2 is canon, she should be even higher. She should also be spec'ed as a Fighter/Druid multiclass but the transition from the 2nd edition ruleset which governed BG1 & 2 to the 5th edition ruleset which governs BG3 makes this problematic. Would have better just not to have her as a playable character.
Having Halsin and Jaheira, also not great, but not a big deal imo. They would have been better served adding in at least one more canonically 'evil' character. Really, Minthara is the only evil companion, although Shadowheart has a plot line that can end in her being evil, and Astarion rolls with basically anything.

Things that are great about BG3 -
Very fast, kinetic feeling combat resolution for a turn based game. Reminds me of Battle Brothers.
Truly nonlinear way to approach -every- combat encounter and NPC fight. This must have taken a shitload of time to implement.
The cosmetic reactivity is still "nice" to have.
The barrelmancy/physics stuff is goofy but fun
I think the 5E adaptation is interesting though it is still too easy and too streamlined.

80 hours in. Arrived at Moonrise, and I think I wrapped up everything before being sent to Mausoleum.
Very happy with Radiance Shart pew pew with luminous armor, and Gale respecced as sorc with twin ray of frost and OP gold gear.
Is 18 Charisma on Gale okay (alert for second feat to go first to twincast Haste), or should I go 20?

Not sure exactly where you are but the intended path is:
- finish nautiloid tutorial (obviously)
- land on beach, make your way to the crash site, grab Shadowheart (she is knocked out basically right in front of you). Explore the crash site, including killing the intellect devourers. Head west-ish of the crash site and pick up Astarion.
- head north of the crash site to the unstable waypoint and pick up Gale. Then explore north of there until you find Lae'Zel in a cage and free her. You'll have to decide who to drop from your party at this point since you can only have 3 companions at a time.
- head just east of where you find Lae'Zel to the old chapel. Best to use dialog checks to avoid a fight here, as you get the same xp as killing them but save your resources, and they don't have any noteworthy gear. Descend down to the door and pass the dialog check to be let in to the chapel. if you pass the dialog check you can surprise the first enemy, who will be alone, and kill him. A second enemy will then be alone in the next room and can be killed. Then you will have to deal with the rest of the enemy party. If you fail the dialog check you can still enter the chapel but will have to fight all six enemies at once unless you find another way in.
- in any event, explore the Chapel until you've released Withers.
- from there head west and north from where you found lae'zel, until you trigger the fight between the tieflings and the goblins. Win that fight then head into the Druid Grove and explore. that should set you on your way.

1. Is the difficulty completely fucked? I read that the hardest difficulty adds flat modifiers to the enemies so that they're too hard early on but become a Joke by the end. Meat-tanks getting one or two shotted. Are there mods to fix this? I was reading that people had to use consumables like haste/resistance potions etc. to clear early encounters, which is interesting but I've never played an RPG where the difficulty was so highly tuned that using consumables other than health and mana potions was necessary.
2. How is the loot? I remember the highest tier items in Divinity 2 being pretty neat, and also that even if you searched every single crate and fought every single mob, you wouldn't have enough money to buy all of the legendaries from shops. Maybe that changed, but I played the launch version.
I guess this raises the following questions:
-is the PLACEMENT of loot random or fixed or hybrid? Like will shop inventory be the same ever playthrough, boss drops, chests, etc?
-Are legendary (or whatever the highest tier items) static or randomized? Like will they roll a bunch of different affixes or will a specific item be the same every time?
-Are there unique items that are only found in specific places/given as quest rewards, and if so are the affixes static or randomized?
-How satisfying overall is the loot?

Tactician is not that difficult. It's more like a normal difficulty setting if you have a grasp of 5e rules. I don't use mods but waiting on a good one that will make a more difficult game. There are some challenging fights in Act 1 for sure, in particular the gnoll warlord fight, but there are frequently legitimate ways to mitigate or avoid challenging fights altogether.
Loot is fine, but your character's strengths will primarily come from knowing how to maximize their class abilities.
loot is mostly fixed and static, and can be found in the same place / earned from the same quest. Loot overall is B+ on the satisfaction scale, if you know what you're doing you can make some insane builds off of loot, but you need the requisite understanding of the loot/class synergies.

entered ilithid hole to chase after ketheric. bumped into mizora. read that she gives special weapon if you beg, but realized that I needed Wyll. So I guess I have to back track and bring him in. Who else should I bring along?
Me Vengenance Polearm Paladin
My typical party is Shadowheart, Gale and Asterion.
I heard Karlach has some dialogue? But I have her soooo underbuilt

Just saw this .. you're probably past it now but I don't think you need Wyll for that scene, although you get some flavor scenes if he's there. And anything involving Mizora will also get some flavor/reaction scenes from Karlach, but again not necessary to have either in your party when you find her in Act 2.
The weapon she gives is a very good warlock weapon, but not necessary if you are playing the companions listed as their intended classes.
Also, at the risk of spoiling, even though Mizora is evil, killing her in Act 2 is the 'evil' choice and doesn't really lead to any long-term benefit for the player. So, I would recommend that you save her in Act 2.

That fight is extremely difficult at level 3 and tough even at level 4.
There is a way to make this fight easier. Either right at the start of combat or one round in, the gnoll warlord should trigger a cutscene. You can probe his mind to see that he's infected, and you can will him to kill the other gnolls. If they attack the two people in the cave instead, you navigated the dialog wrong. After he attacks the other gnolls, you can either kill him while still in combat (if the other gnolls hurt him enough) or will him to kill himself after the fight (two dialog checks).
If you *need* to fight and kill them, you should go find the blighted village and do that, or go do the Karlach/Paladins of Tyr quests which should get you to level 4, and then come back. In the blighted village, you can find 3 ogres. Navigate the dialog correctly and you will get a horn that can summon them. The gnoll fight is a good time to use it.

I don't understand how to use Wyll. Eldritch blast spam seems to be the go to? What's the point of the rapier? Got the infernal rapier as quest reward and accidentally meleed instead of dual eldritch blast and saw the smack only did 10 dmg. meanwhile the eldritch blast does 20 dmg each and pushes back.
also, why do I only have 2 spell slots (lvl 5 only no lower ones) for warlock. seems kinda limited.

Eldritch Blast will definitely do more damage than a melee attack. Warlocks are a unique class, they can be played a number of different ways. If you want to be more of a frontliner, you have to augment your build with spells like mirror image and hellish rebuke, and possibly think about a multiclass dip to get a dueling style.
Most warlocks will just eldritch blast most of the time, especially as you find gear that augments damage dealing cantrips.
The spell slots are limited, but they refresh on a short rest, so that is the tradeoff.

Yes, this is the best burst damage build I know of.
go 2 Tempest Cleric, 9 Sorc (subclass is irrelevant), and 1 wizard.
You need the 1 wizard dip to be able to scribe Chain Lightning.
In Act 3 there is an item that gives you an extra charge of channel divinity. You have to steal it, and when you steal it you get cursed. Once you remove the curse, a Deva appears and you have to kill it. And then you're good to go.
What you do is, use 3 sorc points to cast create water as a quickened spell, then use the remaining 6 sorc points to twin cast Chain lightning. Then use your cleric reaction to inflict max damage. You can devastate a lot of fights this way.
If you also have the staff that allows for one free spell cast without using a spell slot, you can repeat this on Turn 2 by activating that ability, recasting chain lighting, and using your second charge of channel divinity. You can't twin cast it, but it's still a ton of damage for whatever's left over.

polearm master vengeance paladin using halberd of vigilance buffed (cold to synergize with gales frost debuffing) with drake glaive
but then I got Selune's spear of night at end of act 2. But it seems weaker. Am I overlooking something?
