Russian president Vladimir Putin tonight issued a blunt warning to the West not to arm Syrian rebels who “eat the organs” of their enemies.

Following talks in Downing Street with UK prime minister David Cameron, he said the brutal behaviour of the rebels was inconsistent with the “humanitarian and cultural values” of Europe.

While he strongly defended the supply of arms by Moscow to the “legitimate” government of Syrian president Bashar Assad, he also stressed that he wanted to achieve a diplomatic solution to the crisis.

Rebel commander Abu Sakkar gained instant notoriety after footage emerged of him appearing to remove the organs of a pro-regime fighter and then eating them.

In a short video uploaded to YouTube, he says that he found the fighter had mobile phone footage showing the killing of children, rapes, dismemberment and torture.

"Every free Syrian who sees this; you don't know what they can do," he said.

He also warned that if the bloodshed in Syria continues "all Syrian people will be like me."
