Quote from a book I'm reading:

"As they absorbed the gist of these, shock-waves of dismay coursed through the vessel as one by one they heard the worst:

5 May: Destroyer. Attacked. Sinking. U-638.

5 May: Attacked by destroyers. Depth Charges. Leave boat. U-531.

6 May. Attacked by corvette. Sinking. U-438."

Dimbleby, Jonathan. The Battle of the Atlantic: How the Allies Won the War (p. 402). Oxford University Press. Kindle Edition.

Pretty impressive discipline if you're a radio operator on a submarine and you see the hull of your sub breached and you have the wherewithal to follow orders and radio back news of your ship's sinking and what caused it.

Almost none- rarely another German sub would pick them up, but they had no free room to fit another crew on board.
