Why is dentistry completely separate from doctory?

Any other part of the body, I can tell my primary doc there is a problem and they’ll check it out. If they can’t fix it themselves they’ll send you to a specialist but they’ll at least try. But if you did that with a toothache they’d tell you to gtfo, there’s a whole different vertical for that. I’m not an expert but I refuse to believe teeth are more complicated than hearts, knees, ears, etc.

dentists started out in barbershops. they were butchers, mechanics. i don't know for sure but i'm guessing the "serious" doctors did everything they could to exclude them from the practice of medicine.
also it's not *completely* separate, see oral surgeons. kind of a weird niche though.

if it's chronic they send you to a podiatrist
dds/dmd, od, and dpm are all 'doctors' in areas where there is a high volume of routine work that medical doctors don't want to deal with. cleanings, eye exams, orthotics, etc.
