I went to an open mic and did it. I haven't been to many open mics so I wasn't acquainted with the fact that almost everyone bombs horribly. I got a few laughs, but there was only one comedian in the lineup that I would consider competent.
Other comedians are complete freaks though. Really sad stuff like people trying to "make it" in their late forties.
Seems you like you need to be good at crowd work to wake up the crowd a little at one of these things. The one guy who did that was finally able to get laughs after 5-6 comedians got literally no laughs at all.
Not sure when I'll go back or when I'll go back at all, but I had a good time. If I do go back, I'm going to try and work on crowd work lines because LJL that stunk.

back when i lived in mfh, there was some bar on houston that made its back room available to open-mic stand-ups to workshop their material, etc.
I used to love going, because all the half-thought-out jokes and bits were 100x better than polished routines. Its a 180 experience to see amateurs just giving weird perspectives on things.
i wish there were a youtube channel or something for nobodies to do 3 minutes

i remember some puerto rican dude, think he had a stage name like EL TERRIBLE or something. used to do nothing but child abduction, child molestation, child murder stuff, very deadpan.
shrews and libs would boo and scream at him.

nature of comedy, imo, is encountering wacky and strange thoughts and perspectives. its just people talking.
im sure seeing a celeb HBO comic do his act for the 90th time on tour could be cool. He's been tested and has proven entertainment ability.
But seeing some complete weirdo give a strange "take" for 3 or 5 minutes - a succession of weirdos actually -- in a small room with a lot of audience interaction is super fun.
Its a lot like IRL posting on xo. Pro comedy is like a newspaper editorial

Haven't seen it, maybe I'll check it out.
I have a hard time understanding the whole scene. I personally fucking hate karaoke because I can't stand listening to people sing poorly. I would never intentionally subject myself to subpar performances unless it was a children's theater or something.
Why people turn out to sit in the audience and not laugh is beyond me. I understand the person on stage. They may be delusional and retarded, but if you're gonna do it, it's gonna have to be up on stage.
Comedy is a weird thing. It's having a resurgence right now, but nobody is fucking funny. And the people who are into it and attend all think they're also funny, and it couldn't be farther from the truth.

cr.
before screens people would go to comedy clubs as a night out thing without knowing who was performing. people don't do that anymore, they go to see headliners. it's a shame. i love live performances of all kinds and would love to hang out at a comedy club for some drinks. that experience really only exists in MFH, LA, and (now) Austin. and even those places people are going to see headliners way more.
all the biggest new comedians got their start with a podcast or social media. when is the last time there's been a chappelle, seinfeld, etc. that got their start from their stand-up? you gotta either be matt rife or shane gillis. cultivate a following a then do comedy, you can't cultivate a following just doing comedy clubs.

Two schools of thought.
1) cut your teeth on working clubs and rooms, become actually funny, then your stuff translates to online. See someone like Tim Dillon who was getting laughs before he blew up on YouTube.
2) be Matt Rife. Short TikTok clips, not actually funny, audience mostly female, be really hot. No male audience, can't actually make anyone laugh, career limited by no traditional comedy audience, no one respects you.
Choose wisely!

the music industry is worth $17b a year
the comedy industry is less than a $1b and that's after an explosion in popularity
https://www.axios.com/2024/05/10/comedy-industry-boom-growth-revenue-netflix
how many concerts occur in a city a year? how many comedy shows? how many music venues does an average city have? how many comedy venues? how often does a stadium host a comedian? how often do they host a musicians?
this is just objectively wrong. you just have it in your head that "music is dead" because your favorite music is unpopular these days.
sabrina carpenter and shane gillis are probably the two biggest recent break out artists in music and comedy. who do you think sells more tickets?

ok, then you choose a break out comedian who matches sabrina carpenter. or dup lipa, or chappell roan, or doja cat, or bad bunny.
that's exactly my point dude. they don't exist. even biggest comedians aren't nipping the heels of musicians.
way, way, way more music is consumed than comedy. and there's an appetite for more artists too.

i've considered it but after 20 years of comedy podcasts/radio and hearing so many open mic stories i could only see myself doing it as a box check thing.
from what i've heard most open mic shows are filled with aspiring comedians who won't laugh/pay attention and guests of open micers who are only there for them. if people like shane gillis struggle to get a laugh at an open mic after years it seems very unlikely an amateur would, even if you had the potential to be the greatest comedian ever.
although sometimes i do think about greg giraldo giving up THE LAW to be a comedian before drugging himself to death. that sounds 180.

One thing that's almost universally true about comedians that aren't famous is that they aren't even a little bit funny at all. You can tell within 5 seconds whether a comedian 'has it' or not. They make their friends laugh. A good comedian is someone who is naturally funny. If you aren't funny, you don't have it and you don't stand a chance. And for some reason the amateur stand up world is full of people who are 100% unfunny. These people are pretty sad because they have a dream of being a famous comedian but they have no idea how unfunny they are.
Conversely if you have it you rise straight to the top. Not saying it's going to be an easy path or anything. It might take a lot of suffering and networking and putting yourself out there constantly hoping for a break. But if you are naturally extremely funny you're going to move up eventually and not be stuck on the bottom rung of obscurity.
Think of a guy like David Lucas. This dude has to be funny in real life. Has to have been funny before he got his name out there. There was a first time he was on Kill Tony and I'm sure he absolutely killed. Preparation meets opportunity. If you're going to make it you have to have at a minimum a tight 5 minutes that absolutely kills, that you're extremely confident in.
The hardest part besides networking and persistence and all that typical stuff is you have to have been born funny. It's just like being LeBron you just have to win the genetic lottery. Some small percentage of people are naturally hilarious. If you are funny and have the confidence there's never been an easier time to make it.

There are two kinds of comics IMO
1.) The naturally funny kind you're talking about that doesn't have to work that hard on their material. They just "have" "it".
2.) The striver workaholic type that isn't very funny, but just slaves over making the tightest set they can possibly make. I think Louie is one of those people, he is just not funny in interviews or outside of his standup. But he's one of the GOATUS POTUS anyway.
The best comics are a marriage of the two, but these open mic guys don't have either.

louie started in comedy in the mid 80s and didn't break out until 2005. twenty years. he's a perfect example for what i'm talking about.
ever watch the semi-autobiographical show louie?

i've listened to louie talk about the comedy industry countless times and everything i'm saying is drawing upon that.

"Conversely if you have it you rise straight to the top. Not saying it's going to be an easy path or anything. It might take a lot of suffering and networking and putting yourself out there constantly hoping for a break."
this just isn't true. some of the best comedians languished for decades. i've heard so many comedians talk about how the funniest comedians they knew never caught a break.
i see that you're saying it "isn't easy" and "requires networking", but that's incompatible with "if you have it you rise straight to the top." and also incompatible with everything i've heard from actual comedians. i haven't heard a single professional comedian say what you're saying. i have no direct experience obviously, i'm just relaying what literally every comedian that has talked about breaking into stand-up has said about it.
99% of comedy podcasts is comedians shooting the shit which includes of a lot of talk about the comedy business. find me a clip of a comedian who supports your POV. what are you basing your opinions on?

I go to this kickass free comedy night every week, where the first hour and a half are established local (sometimes out of town) "professionals" doing 10-15 minute sets to basically try out material. Same people I see at the paid professional local comedy nights.
Then they have a 2 minute each "lightning" round open mic, where literally anyone can get up there. Often its the quasi pros getting up there to try material and then amateurs doing their first try
Its really awesome. Hit or miss but when it hits it is really good.
Its often not funny among the amateurs but no one really cares.
