not so interesting from a historical perspective, but a fun city with 180 food and culture and people watching and walking around various neighborhoods.
certain areas are safer than others. if you're street smart and take the normal precautions you'll be fine.
there are better places in south america for a 1st trip if you want traditional historical shit

the palermos are nice. recoleta is super rich and fancy. downtown is fine, typical busy big city stuff. other than that it can be hit or miss and some areas like la boca are legit dangerous. i never felt unsafe on the subway but that was many years ago before their economy imploded. tigre is a nice day trip, as is the ferry to colonia. take lots of hundos and exchange them on the blue market downtown, then buy their finest wine, steak, and leather goods for pennies on the dollar.
montevideo is pretty much the same thing but it's safer and more chill, but their currency isn't fucked up.

why do tourists worry so much about how far their money goes in x place or y? im as cheap a jew as any, but currency fluctuations in any given country just dont concern me. i'm not gonna go or not go somewhere because hotels are 20% cheaper or more expensive than usual.

i get it. there are various places ive been where the street rates are much better than the official rates. this phenomenon wasnt unique to argentina.

i get that BA is more expensive for gringo tourists now, but who's really not going to go to BA now because beef and wine while still really cheap is not fucking dirt cheap?
just making up numbers because i dont know how much non-kosher parillas are there, but is someone really not going to BA for a once in decade trip for 3 nights because a parilla now will cost them $40 instead of $20 for a meal that would either way cost them $300 in MFH?

yeah, sure. when i'm talking about currency fluctuations, i'm talking about 1-2 week tourist trips. obviously if you're gonna digital nomad for 3 months, it makes a huge difference to go somewhere with favorable conditions.
i'm just saying, most people arent gonna go to japan more than once in their lifetime for 1-2 weeks. it really doesnt matter to them whether the yen is weak or strong. yet they talk about it a lot.

if you get the oppy to take only 1-2 int'l trips a year, and you're planning on having kids eventually, you've got limited travel opportunity. you better rush to get to where you want!
i wouldn't put off a place i really wanted to see based on some fx situation.

i remember it in algeria, most recently. google backs me up:
Last week, the official exchange rate allowed one euro to be sold for 145 Algerian dinar, while on the same day, currency traders were selling one euro for nearly 241 dinars on the black market — 66% higher than the official exchange rate.
