Say you go to a random airport, and get to survey everyone and for those who say they can play chess, what percent of them actually know any openings?

Btw, I play a slight variation of the london system if white, and caro kann or kings indian, depending on how white opens if I'm black

Memorizing openings is for losers, work on your endgame instead

you need to focus more on mid game if you're less than an advanced player

The reality is that opening theory is not the deciding factor in the vast majority of chess games and is boring as fuck to study. Tactical errors dominate low level play and are much more damaging than the sort of minor errors someone who only casually studies opening theory will make.

You're both right. My dislike of studying openings is why I didn't take chess more seriously.

Endgame study is more conceptual and interesting imo. I punch above my rating in endgames and below in openings. I think opponents get surprised when I can come back from a disadvantage because I have a better understanding of endgames

probably plenty

openings are the most common part of chess technique to study

the question is why do people play chess when we have starcraft brood war? huge "?" next to that one

chess is worse cus u cant play with a sideboard to play out lines. you have to hold everyhting in yer head which is a artificial challenge. but starcraft is not perfect too cus it test more than the thinking but also fingers execution
