Many of their bankruptcy attorneys are likely to leave next in order to get a piece of this lucrative bankruptcy work as this firm collapses.

LJL at the absurdity of this. They have 1,200 lawyers making them $2B in revenue. They only have 179 real partners and PP(E)P of $5.6M. How do you screw that up?

It's like having a money printing machine and mismanaging it so bad that you can't pay your bills.

it said their revenue growth was flat while AMLAW was 13% growth on avg, once a few top partners leave it furks up the economics. they cant recruit new partners and offer them 20m whatever without furking up other partners pay, i guess its sorta a ponzi scheme or some shit almost, it sounds almost jewish

the biglaw model is fucking ridiculous. it totally is a pyramid scheme and a handful of huge rainmakers leaving can cause a collapse.

It's their own fault for (a) (presumably) guaranteeing big payments for partners and (b) not being able to slide and let do to weather the storm on "flat" growth. Even if they lost 25% of their revenue, their revenue per lawyer would still top $1M.

LJL again on any business model that requires 13% growth and guaranteed 8-figure salaries to avoid bankruptcy.

well the problem was prob that other firms offered rainmarkers even moar gauranteed money, so if everyone is doing it then u have to do it too

even cravath is doing lateral partner hiring which they never did in like 100 year history except like once. or maybe that was watchell... whatever

Kinda sad that Cravath is doing it. They used to be "above" that sort of thing.

These huge guarantees are like gambling. Would probably be better to just operate as a chill, fratty $3M PPP firm than over-leverage your way to $6M PPP and an inevitable collapse.

This is how all businesses fail

Debt, leverage, greed, and a period of slowdown. Wealth transfer to the top just like Jamie Dimon buying failed banks. Those with liquidity, stability, and patience always weather the storm.

Service partners are always vulnerable and hopefully save and invest their money well. 75% of the people at these firms truly rely on a half dozen or so rainmakers.

For sure service partners should have been saving up for the inevitable.

But, saying it's only half a dozen rain makers is overstating it. This firm has (or had!) 1,200 lawyers. IIRC from my biglaw days, at my firm, no one client was responsible for more than a few percent of revenue and there were over 100 different clients that provided more than $5M in revenue or something.
