Do people from outside of NYC consider living in NYC, specifically Manhattan, as being prestigious?

Why or why not?

By most, I'd say yes.

People have a tendency to think that if you can afford to live in Manhattan, you must be successful.

When most people from flyover state, USA hear that you live in a big city (even the regional big city, like Chicago in the Midwest) they are either impressed or get incredibly insecure and want to fight.

certainly there's nothing inherently prestigious about living in manhattan as a young professional, but, and i'm not sure this is the right term, growing up in manhattan has a certain lay prestige. i'll hear someone say they grew up in new york, and people ask where thinking westchester or something, and then the person says manhattan and they react in a similar was as when someone says they go to yale.

I live in Manhattan.

At a pub I frequent in The Village, I often bump into tourists from other states and countries. Most are VERY impressed by the city and in casual conversation ask where I live. When I tell them I live down the street a few blocks away, they typically respond with, "Wow! That must be amazing! I'd kill to live here."

I think most people find Manhattan to be prestigious, and would love to live here for at least a while, but most can not due to the cost and/or family obligations.

Terrible flame dude. Most Americans don't think manhattan is prestigious. They visit because like vegas, it's one of those places you need to see. They may think NYC is exciting in the generic sense, but they are turned off by the high taxes, low quality of living, ultra liberalism, dirty conditions, outrageous rent, snobbery of the people, etc.

In terms of prestige, palm beach, la jolla, malibu, brentwood, all PWN Manhattan.
