my day consists largely of recycling documents by taking out one party's name and inserting another, dumping in paragraphs from other precedent documents and conforming the terms. on occasion, i get the odd legal opinion, filing or prospectus to comment on. this also consists mostly of adding commas, correcting people's poor grammar and dumping in paragraphs from similar SEC filings.

my work product is completely inconsistent - all over the palce. sometimes i get praised for excellent work, other times my boss yells at me and asks me why i would ever submit something like this to him. the sad part is, i put in exactly the same amount of effort into assignments that get praise and those that get shit reviews.

to be honest, i don't have the knack for attention to detail to do this well.

i also don't care about the clients or the transactions. i am generally not aroused in any way by business, finance or capital markets.

every day i contemplate my escape plan, and every time i think i'm ready to walk, i chicken out.

help me take the plunge, doods.

Why did you do transactional if you don't like that sort of work and have no interest in the subjectmatter?

the shit i did over the summer was more interesting IIRC, but it may also be the cumilative effect. i don't remember hating it right away.

i guess not being particularly into it is emphasized when you're working long hours, are forced to give up your weekends and social engagements and don't have time to eat, sleep or piss properly.

yeah the lack of attention to detail is my biggest bitch.

Sadly you dont get to be a senior lawyer by skipping that step and moving straight to golf and schmoozing very often.

i don't think i lack attention to detail in everything; just what i do, it seems. i think i could be better if i did something i was more interested in.

suggestions? (other than killself)

As someone who supervises junior associates I have to say that lack of attention to detail is the #1 thing that pisses me off.

It's basically laziness, not everyone is some giant legal intellect but everyone can be careful and pay attention to detail, especially when they are being paid $160K as an entry-level.

as someone who used to supervise a few juniors and was supervised myself - a lot of it comes down to the way you read.

If you have been working 12 hours and you need to draft something quick - sometimes there will be a misplaced word or a typo - you can proof read the fucking thing a million times and it wont make a difference - if you didn't catch it the second time you wont catch it the tenth.

EDIT: I was actually pretty good with detail except with one supervisor who was a stickler and kind of stressful - I feel the added stress made it harder to catch the mistakes.

i definitely agree with that last part. i work almost exclusively for a guy the mere sight of whom stresses me the fuck out and makes me forget everything.

and you are probably fine - my work product was fine 99% of the time. But I would have one lousy typo once every 2-3 months and the supervisor would call me out and say "you need to proof your work."

I probably billed 30% more time just checking every email I sent 4 times for this supervisor because I was worried about mistakes.

like i said, i put in the same amount of effort into something that turns out good (based on reviews) as the thing that turns out shitty. i can't really account for the discrepancy. i guess sometimes i catch it and sometimes i don't.

that said, i think i may have ADD. my short term memory is absolute shit and i can't sit still and focus for more than 5 minutes at a time.

yes. it's like earl says. i can read the damn thing 50 times and i still don't catch it. i don't know why.

honestly, i think under any other circumstances i would have been fired by now. my only saving grace at this point is that the team leader and firm recently got sued by a senior associate who left our group. they settled, but for no small sum. if they fired me, i'd probably have many of the same claims, though, of course, i'd never actually sue.

DESCRIBE these types of claims, since you are not suing.

I cant believe people think they have legitimate claims as at will employees. Curious to see what people think.

yeah I guess I buy the sex discrimination - enough lawyers are pigs. I cant imagine there are many claims of racial or sexual orientation discrimination that could be proven nowadays.
