Who's excited for the Loyola Patent Fair? What will our prospects be like this year? More aggregate callbacks/offers given? Higher/lower participation rate in terms of students attending?

Won't sugar coat it for you. When I went through PLIP I was EE with good grades, and it was 2006. Chem E d00ds had a hard time then. You need to focus on mid-size firms, to be fair. Do you have a reg number? In big firms, this doesn't matter. Having not worked in a smaller firm environment, I expect it does because they want you to do the calling to the Examiner etc. You will be dealing with sole inventors more in those firms. My suggestion is to go ahead and spend the money to get your reg number with a course, and if you strike out, you can use that to get a job.

Good luck, I know it is hard out there.

Back in the summer of 2008 I had around 10interviews 3 or 4 call backs

I was top 1/3 at a school ranked around 70 and had a 2.8 in ug gpa

if the undergrad gpa was above a 3 I am sure I would have done better

eventually took a job paying market in dc

The only people in patents who are not gonna have a problem are electrical engineers and software people. Chemical engineers aren't in hot demand, but my prediction is that you'll get 3-4 callbacks, and at the most 1 offer if you're lucky. I base my opinion on seeing mechanical engineers, material engineers and other engineers with the same grades and same rank of school.

It depends how you define "CompE." If you have circuit experience, then you'll be fine. But I'd try to work in the word "Electrical" somewhere on your resume (i.e. if your degree is from the Electrical and Computer Engineering department, consider listing a "B.S. in Electrical and Computer Engineering" or something like that).

yeah this is the right answer. Not that many computer patents its almost always circuit and straight EE experience. I know several compE and CS people with nothing. The EE kids all have something. Most ChemE & Chem people have something, Bio people a below that, and then all the other BS. Straight software and programming people are sol.

Friend of mine.. roughly top 20% at a T10, got many callbacks and many offers form the fair. In fact, I think after his school's EIW, he ended up taking an offer from his patent fair ones.

Just got the Symplicity login info. Looks like there are fewer firms interviewing this year than last. This could be a bad sign for OCI and hiring in general for summer associate positions.

:(

man you are fucking retarded. it could also mean that IP as a practive group is not expected to grow as much as others, so the effect might be limited to IP practices and not to firms that are divesified.

Symplicity says there are 162 firms coming this year. How many firms were there last year? Didn't see many IP Boutiques on there and I don't like my odds with BigLaw firms (especially in NYC / Chicago / DC). Is there any way to tell how many students registered?

Subject: Number of students

Sent in a question during the live broadcast and got an answer as to how many students registered. Approximately 1700 students have registered and (generally) only about half that number will get enough interviews that they’ll actually attend.

Hope this helps.

Some people on TLS suggested that they did. I think one mentioned that s/he received the callback one hour after the screening interview...
