The 45 day rule, in the past, might have required firms to dip back into a pool of recipients who likely took offers elsewhere, causing the firm to interview and take in substantially lesss competitive people in order to fulfill needs or to hire 1Ls, who are not as predictable with respect to fulfilling those needs (less certainty that theyll come on board when they graduate, also even more difficult to predict hiring needs 3 years in advance). Learn 5 things about the work the firm does before your cb that your classmates probably don't know (e.g. most noteworthy recent deals/cases, recent big-name lateral partners and clients they brought, etc.) and ask smart questions about them. If you get your interview list beforehand, try to find out what stuff your interviewers have worked on and ask them about it. The more you seem interested in them and generally excited to work at the firm, the higher your success rate will be. Avoid purely negative subjects (e.g. big name partner lateraled out) b/c you don't have the grades to win points for caution. Smile a lot and put out as many good vibes as you can.
