Associates at the firm I was at over the summer said that it had picked up a lot in the previous 6 months. There were a surprising number of summers gunning for tax spots, though.

Worse than lit and regulatory, but slightly better than corporate. If you want to do tax, you should obviously aim for a firm with a fairly busy corporate practice. Not all firms are equal in this respect.

You're not considering an LLM, right?

Generally, yes. But not all work is deal driven. For example, there are long-term restructuring projects that are 100% tax driven--those don't disappear just because the economy sucks. There's also tax controversy, though few big firms have substantial controversy practices. At boutiques the story is different. Advisory work, which is primarily what the little places do, is significantly less cyclical than deal work.

that appears to be the consensus. it's weird though that the LLM degree literally lost all its value within a 2 year time period. 2 or 3 years ago, the tax LLM degree was the only way people with "Tier 1" degrees got good jobs. now, apparently, an LLM is seen as a demerit.

Nah, people who already got Biglaw will still get part-time LLMs - it was never a way to polish a turd, except maybe for a 2 year period where Cravath was hiring 160 summers.
