Does anyone know anything about the usefulness of an MS in computer science? Do people get good jobs coming out of these things? Pay? Are they possible to do part-time?
I'm thinking of getting a MS, either as a way to get out of law totally or as a way to shift into patent stuff.

The law degree may scare employers until you prove you enjoy programming. Release open source applications on the side to prove you can code and enjoy doing it. Otherwise you may have trouble proving you're not a risk.
If you are bailing mid law school ignore this, then people will just write you off as not interested in practicing law (easy when you consider the personality of most engineers).
It pays pretty well, particularly if you live in a cheap area. I was 4/4 for programming interviews recently and 3/4 for offers. The pay is more than shitlaw but less than top law. It's almost exactly in the valley of the bimodal lawyer salary distribution.
I have a BS in comp sci but MS in related field if that helps ya out.
There are tons of comp sci grads who can't code at all. If you can and don't have crushing debt you'll be fine. You need nerd credentials too and releasing applications is a huge way to prove you enjoy programming. It's useful to know how to talk to engineers and businessmen.

"but you did engineering once, right?"
My UG friends work at MS, facebook, Intel, Boeing, Google, etc.
Am I more qualified to make an assessment than you are now?

I have an MBA from HBS.
Try again.
Probably whiter than you are.

I'm from the race that tried to wipe out all the lesser ones.
I know about Hitler, sir.
You're not good enough for him.

i have seen people get in these companies from a state school. both directly and with low gpa made up for with successful work experience. if you haven't then maybe you don't hang out with state school people.
like they would refuse to hire someone from state school with published papers/top of their class.
google recruits at web developer conferences. anyone who shows up and knows what they're doing can end up working there. i know people who took this route.

WTF? Some of the best science/engineering schools ARE state schools.
Directional state U isn't exactly Berkeley.
I think you misunderstood my bitchy comment.

eh...my uncle went high up GE engineering from podunk state. real high up. my state school isn't the best but it's no slouch and probably closer to what you mentioned.
i think we agree more than we think.
regardless, an excellent coder with no degree will get hired at these places. john carmack dropped out of college and he'd get hired as a senior at Microsoft in a second.
programming is a weird field where you can just write the program to prove you know how. carmack and a few others take this route. i think i do mostly agree with you if you'll note this small exception.
