I know many that have done the mass mailing route to "midlaw" and small law. You need to have a really broad search here, and I would do it even in markets where I didn't have ties. You can find many firms around the country with 20-100 attorneys that have partners from CCN.
I know of a few below-median CCN people that have gotten jobs this way in the past year (as 3L's), and I know many more that have gotten interviews but no actual offers. Many of these people are living on stipends from the schools right now, have lined up volunteer public interest gigs, and are still looking. We'll know in about 8 months where they end up.
