Okay so briefly:
One gay students asks Scalia a bullshit question about Lawrence v. Texas. Then out of no where, he asks Scalia if he sodomizes his wife. Scalia doesnt answer and the student badgers and yells at him, pestering him and practically needs to be restrained by our dean and the moderator.
The next gay students asks Scalia to sign a petition signing on to the "homosexual agenda" - this comment was not so much offensive as stupid seeing as judges specifically cant do that.
There were other reasonable questions about Lawrence, and he explained Romer as well, but a couple of students really embarrassed themselves, their cause, and our school.

He was almost crying about all the 'RINOS' out there, talking about how Chris Shays should lose his job for criticizing Tom DeLay, and how Rick Santorum was an opportunist for not actively defending DeLay, and about how the state of New York is trying to get more taxes from him.
Basically, he wants us to have a Canadian system where legislators almost always vote straight party-line.

it was really embarrassing. I didn't mind so much the petition question, but the 'do you sodomize your wife' question was beyond the pale. there are ways of asking a question that personalizes an issue for somebody without publicly humiliating them and yourself in the process (like, "how would you feel if the government specifically tried to regulate what goes on in your house/bedroom?").
poor form.

That's the difference between the left and the right. People on the left who want to take obnoxious and idiotic potshots at people have to do it by heckling them at college speeches. Right-wingers who want to engage in that behavior get their own talk shows.

Date: April 12th, 2005 11:42 PM Author: purple provocative menage wagecucks Subject: Scalia on Asians at UMich
I'm curious. While at the Mich preview weekend someone who attended Scalia's visit to UMich said that Scalia continually referred to Asians as "Chinks" throughout his speech. According to the student, the audience was nervously apprehensive about his continual use of the term "Chink" but no one in the audience ever said anything about it.
True? Semi-true? Based on some small nugget of truth? An outright lie?
p.s. I also heard that a frisky Mich student asked, in a semi-delicate way, whether or not Clarence Thomas is merely Scalia's lackey. Again, true? or an exaggeration of the truth?

The student made a comment like "Clarence Thomas, the Robin to your Batman," and Scalia cut him off immediately and said that was disrespectful and that he didn't care what the question was, he wasn't going to answer it after that. Then the kid kind of sheepishly apologized. It was really embarrassing. But not semi-delicate at ALL.
I went to four different Scalia events while he was here, and I did not hear him use "chink" once.

When Scalia was at Penn a year or two ago, there was that motley group of protesters outside, and someone asked scalia how he felt about the fact that students were "protesting his policies."
Scalia: "They're not my policies. They're the law."
Agreed, not nearly the same. But you could feel the sentiment...

That is pretty screwed up. Fair or unfair, I'm sure such behavior didn't reflect kindly on NYU in his mind.
Nothing remotely that bad happened when he came to Michigan; there were protesters but he gets that everywhere he speaks. He even sent us this message:
Supreme Court of the United States
Chambers of Justice Antonin Scalia
December 20, 2004
Student Senate
The University of Michigan Law School
625 South State Street
Ann Arbor, MI 48109
Ladies and Gentlemen:
It was thoughtful of you to convey an official thank-you on behalf of your
student body. I frankly have not encountered such courtesy in my now many
years of visiting law schools. Many thanks.
I thoroughly enjoyed my few days among you---and you can be sure that I
will be well disposed to accept a future invitation from the University of
Michigan Law School. Best wishes to all of you for the New Year.
Sincerely,
/signed/
Antonin Scalia

What idiots. They made complete fools of themselves asking irrelevant, inane questions. It would be cool as shit to be able to ask good questions of Scalia, and they wasted the chance.
And what's to protest? Scalia's jurisprudence is rejected by the majority in cases like Lawrence and Romer.

Agreed. Scalia plays down the importance of privacy on this topic, so some kid hits him with a question that seems out of line precisely because the issue is so private. Scalia's refusal to answer the question is a performative contradiction of his conceptual advocacy. It sounds like the kid was out of line only insofar as Scalia refuses to act in accordance with the theories he advances from the bench.
The kid was wrong in action because Scalia is wrong in theory. I don't fault the kid here. I'm glad that NYU kids can get over the blind worship of prestige and authority.

Yeah but isn't his conceptual advocacy only that there's not a constitutional right to privacy. He still can refuse to answer any question that he pleases during a speaking engagement.

First of all I don't agree with Scalia on the issue.
Second, you're an idiot because there is a clear distinction.
Scalia is saying that society can choose to regulate private sexual conduct and that no right of privacy trumps such ability.
Now what does trying to embarass Scalia by asking an obviously out of line question have anything to do with the above?

It was out of line because it flouted our convention of protecting sexual conduct through privacy. But according to Scalia there is no such compelling right, so between just he and the kid, this shouldn't have been out of line. If Scalia lived his advocacy he would have answered the question.
He's invoking protections that he refuses to grant to others.

"Scalia's refusal to answer the question is a performative contradiction of his conceptual advocacy."
No, that's just one of the possibilities. For instance, it could also be an implicit stance against the notion that his personal experience and conduct are relevant to the matter at hand. And a strong case could be made for this possiblity. After all, hypocricy doesn't generally deny the truth of a proposition.
"The kid was wrong in action because Scalia is wrong in theory."
Yeah, only if you're right in claiming that only on possible motive for his refusal to answer exists. Yours is an argument by exclusion. You assert but don't demonstrate that your possiblity is the last one standing.

The NYU freaks continued their embarrassment by shouting and blowing noisemakers directly outside of the ceremony where Scalia and the people honoring him were speaking. One of the best speakers was the head of the ACLU, btw.
On the way to dinner, I was told to fuck off by my classmates who shouted "fuck you scalia" and "bigotry go home". There were similar signs everywhere.
Dinner was good and I got a chance to shake Scalia's hand and talk to him for about 45 seconds. He seems like a nice personable guy, and people who know him echo that sentiment.
The big loser here was Dean Revesz who was green with disgust at the behavior of his students, many of whom were personally invited by him to these events. He was visibly humiliated as a 4th Circuit judge honoring Scalia has to pause as he was being shouted down by chants of "FUCK YOU NINO" coming from outdoors.
Clearly a classy day for all NYU liberals promoting free expression and academic freedom.

Nor would most liberals at NYU. Don't paint all liberals with the crazy bunch just because of a few fringe activists.
The ones who are shouting obscenities obviously hurt their cause -- I'm sure Scalia was smiling on the inside -- so Earl should simmer down.

Well there were about 50 people shouting down Scalia, so it wasn't quite a small minority.
I have no problem with protest, but organized disruption of an event to honor someone as distinguished and important (law wise) as Scalia is humiliating.

Quit bitching.
50 (your estimate) out of, what?, 1500 (my estimate) NYU Law liberals and gay rights supporters participated in these obscenities. (And I'm not counting non-law school idiots who might've also participated, showcasing their own brand of meretricious disgrace.)
Scalia was probably pleased as punch.
The protests were exhibitionist and juvenile and lacked any sort of pragmatic rhetorical exchange. (After all, they careened even your wagon into a reactionary huff -- a sign of dispensation by both parties of thoughtful dialogue.)
My objection is to your contention that, blanket-wide, "liberals and fags" agree with the tactics employed here.
They don't, any more than Scalia's arguably disrespectful, uber-Catholic dissents (mentioning "flag-pole sitters" in the Lawrence oral argument, for example) render his arguments without merit, even despite his entertainment and vain claims to objectivity.
