It's just cultural imprinting. We tend to prefer women who you'd think are 10-15 lbs. overweight, and would still be attracted to the sorts you think would need to drop 25-30 lbs.
The girl in the left in my OP, for example, is generally regarded among Hispanics as very pretty facially, but verging on too thin. To white Americans, she might even be verging on "curvy".
