Ronald Reagan Loves Today’s Social Justice Warriors

Journalism is its own religion. Journalists, particularly those over the age of 40, answered a calling.

When I sat inside my journalism classes at Ball State University, I dreamed of reaching my 40s as a columnist at the Indianapolis Star and earning $70k. There was no Internet, no dream of being a national sports columnist or a broadcaster of any kind. I wanted to be my hometown’s Mike Royko.

A career in journalism fit my upbringing and worldview. Like Royko, I wanted to be a voice for the little guy, someone who challenged authority the way Royko confronted Chicago Mayor Richard Daley’s political machine.

Journalism’s “voice for the voiceless” tenet matched the principles taught in my grandmother’s tiny church.

Proverbs 31 verses 8 and 9 say: “Open thy mouth for the dumb in the cause of all such as are appointed to destruction. Open thy mouth, judge righteously, and plead the cause of the poor and needy.” That’s the King James version. The common English translation says: “Speak out on behalf of the voiceless, and for the rights of all who are vulnerable. Speak out in order to judge with righteousness and to defend the needy and the poor.”

Here’s how I interpret the verses: Society targets the poor and the needy for destruction and exploitation in ways the poor and needy do not recognize (dumb), which makes them voiceless in their own defense. Speak out on their behalf and righteously call out their exploiters.

That’s journalism. It’s a selfless profession. In their book, The Elements of Journalism, Bill Kovach and Tom Rosenstiel explain that the public’s interest – and the truth – must supercede self-interest.

During the past 15 years, we’ve trained the public and aspiring journalists to believe self-involvement and self-interest are standard in journalism and that there’s a huge pot of gold awaiting the most entertaining, self-interested journalists. That’s why millennials and the people who pander to millennials via social media argued the death of Grantland signaled the death of sports journalism.

I repeat: Journalism is a selfless profession. Or at least it was.

Now journalism is a tool for the elite to argue on behalf of the elite. This phenomenon can best be seen among the social justice warrior “journalists.” They are the lead proponents of the Ronald Reagan-esque, “trickle down” social justice sweeping America’s college campuses.

The vast majority of African-Americans are not career college students raised by millionaire parents. Jonathan Butler’s “struggle” at Missouri is not the “struggle” of your typical 25-year-old black man. The ink spilled and Internet bandwidth utilized capturing Butler’s “harrowing” experience at Missouri insult and trivialize the real obstacles faced by African-American men. But Butler’s trauma rings authentic to the millennial social justice journalists who see Columbia, Missouri and other college campuses as ground zero of the new civil rights movement.

Pieces of black tape across the faces of black Yale professors and Woodrow Wilson’s name on a building are not representative (or even symptoms) of the real problems facing young black men. These are the problems of the elite being written about and discussed by a group of assimilated elites completely disconnected from the traditional African-American struggle.

It’s trickle-down social justice based on the ridiculous belief that “safe spaces” on predominantly white college campuses will one day lead to “safe spaces” in predominantly black ghettos. Let me translate that so there’s no ambiguity: Black elites believe if white elites loved them more, things would improve for poor black people.

Trickle-down social justice is the bastard stepchild of W.E.B. Du Bois’ talented-tenth theory, a black, elitist doctrine developed by white liberals and later abandoned by Du Bois. This modern-day social justice movement isn’t nearly as noble as Du Bois’ misguided one-in-10 ideology. We’re now protesting, discussing and analyzing racial issues that impact one in 25 African-Americans.

How did black media get this disconnected from the issues impacting the mass of black people?

My father didn’t graduate from high school. My mother worked as a factory worker and as a cashier at a grocery store. I was the first person in my immediate family to go away to and graduate from college. No matter how high I climb the corporate and economic ladders, I can’t escape my upbringing. My dad owned a tavern and a house in the ghetto. My mother was a union worker. When I see the working poor, I see me and my dad sharing a one-bedroom apartment, I see my mother working two jobs, I see my extended family, I see all the regulars at the Masterpiece Lounge (my dad’s place), I see endless potential.

My journey has taught me the difference between struggle and rude inconvenience. I suspect the same is true for many of my peers my age and older. I’m privileged. Fixing my inconveniences, no matter how rude and hurtful, do not liberate the people struggling.

I don’t think black millennials involved in journalism understand this. The profession has become too self-interested, and they’re too far removed from the struggle and the well-intentioned counsel of the handful of elders willing to be real with them.

From my perspective, the journey of the African-American is beginning to resemble the Native-American journey. The educated and assimilated who never spent a day on the reservation (ghetto) and/or were treated terribly on the reservation are now controlling the conversation about what should be done to correct the problems on the reservation. Not to be impolite, but the guy who got his ass beat everyday and had to take the long way from school isn’t the ideal spokesman for Baltimore’s western district, the southside of Chicago, Miami Gardens, or Kwame Kilpatrick’s Detroit.

You wonder why there’s little attention paid and even less emotion shown toward the drugs, violence, illegitimacy, education dysfunction and law-enforcement policies fueling mass incarceration? Those are reservation issues. Black elites physically left the reservation years ago; the emotional abandonment we’re witnessing was inevitable.

The energy and protests centered around police brutality are a smokescreen. If the protests were about the value of each black life surrendered to unjustified violence, we wouldn’t sit by police scanners waiting for a white cop to use deadly force irresponsibly. Murder, regardless of perpetrator, is painful.

The fight for body cameras and courteous arrests is a tactic to prevent a James Blake (former tennis star) from being mistaken for Michael Brown or Eric Garner. Or stop Doug Glanville (former baseball star) from experiencing 90 seconds of inconvenience in his driveway. The Atlantic, a magazine I respect, allowed Glanville to whine for thousands of words about a police encounter that would be celebrated in most black neighborhoods.

The fight for body cameras, courteous arrests, safe spaces free of Woodrow Wilson’s ghost and multi-million-dollar diversity programs is being led by people with voices and no real connection, concern or understanding of the voiceless.

The voiceless oftentimes do not recognize the ways they’re being exploited, especially when their user is being manipulated as well. Black elites assume poor black people desire the same thing they do: the unconditional love of white folk.

Not true. Feelings – from love to joy to respect to animosity, every last one of them – are fleeting, random and, quite frankly, non-essential. Needs, things essential to survival, trump feelings, emotions essential to a good life. Poor people focus on their needs. Rich people focus on their feelings.

Liberal elites want America to feel fair. Poor people want a path to survival, upward mobility and off the reservation.

The deaths of Eric Garner, Trayvon Martin, Tamir Rice and my cousin, Anton Butler, at the hands of law enforcement (and a wannabe cop) are tragic, sad and disturbing. But black people trapped in ghettos don’t triple lock their doors, put bars on their windows and carry firearms even when they’re felons because they’re afraid of the police. They do it because conditions in the ghetto have been orchestrated in a way to amplify violence.

Body cameras, safe spaces in faraway places and other trickle-down solutions won’t fix any of it. The pampered and the spoiled are making a mockery of poor people’s real struggle.
