I can't stomach the thought of paying $40k for private school, and it would mean we'd be saving essentially no money (once 2nd kid is of school age). Moving to Westchester sounds awful (commute unbearable) and I'd prob be paying the difference in property taxes. NJ is a no go on commute as well.

We would have to try to move into a good zone. Perhaps just do it until HS and then try to get the kid into a decent private HS?

Some MFH public elementary schools are very good, mostly on UES, UWS. Mostly UMC families who donate money for a big PA budget for extra activities, etc. Check demographics- if it's at least 2/3 white / Asian you're probably fine. Middle school is more complicated though. You can't guarantee you're in a good one just by living in a zone. Most private schools take the bulk of new entries in 9th grade too so figuring out a good solution for middle school is what makes it hard.

probably fine for elementary school if ur zoned ok as the poaster above said. obviously g&t schools are highly cr if ur child is smart enough to get in

i say all this as someone who is sending their 3yo to private school for five 1/2 days a week for $26k/year

PSA: All the good public school zones will be flooded with Yuppies within the next decade, as is happening in Dumbo. You'll end up being "rezoned" to another zone next to the projects.

I send my 3 y/o to a small christian school. It's not the academic fast track, but the teachers and students are mostly whitemos and she says the pledge of allegiance every day. Costs about 900/month.

latina immigrant involved in NY public schools was shocked to learn that her "A" student child could not do simple fractions in high school.

https://nypost.com/2026/10/31/us-news/adriana-aviles-says-her-son-was-given-phony-grades-is-behind-in-math/

I’m a longtime parent leader, I’ve served as PTA president, CEC president, and I now sit on the Citywide Council on High Schools. I’ve formed close relationships with educators at every stop.

I became active in my children’s education because I knew that the only way to be truly informed was to be involved. I thought I was fully aware of how my son was doing in school.

I was so wrong.

My son wasn’t in advanced classes, he was in general education, he didn’t take the Regents in middle school. I relied on his teachers to tell me the truth about how he was doing.

I failed too. I didn’t scrutinize his work closely or check his performance on state test scores because I figured if his report cards were good then everything was fine.

The freshman was consistently given straight A’s in math at Louis Pasteur Middle School.

It was only recently, after I realized how far behind he is, that I looked back and discovered he was deemed “not proficient” in math on a seventh-grade state exam.

How can he not be proficient in math but was receiving As?

Why didn’t his middle school ever give him additional resources?

I feel deceived.

Looking back, there were warning signs. The teachers barely gave homework. He was allowed to revise his answers on tests after they were graded — and get a new grade. Teachers had a surprisingly laid-back attitude about missed assignments.

lmao. This would have been just basic due diligence. How could you not want to see how he's performing compared to local and state averages? Would be interesting to know what those numbers actually were.

Welcome to "Grading for Equity," coming to a Blue state near you. They are also doing away with zeroes and late penalties. This concept was invented around 2018 and districts are pushing it through even though it fails by any measure of logic.
