20s, nobody cares because we all do it.

30s, most of us slow down and you start realize who might be showing signs of a problem.

40s, it's very obvious.

You see their work, looks, families, and mental health just fucking implode. Years of compulsive boozing takes a massive toll. The physical difference between a routine, hard drinker and a normal person at 45 can be startling.

I am still a GC-cucked lawyer slave and I currently work around people that average about a decade older than me. I would say 10% have a debilitating alcohol problem. Of that fraction, about half are open drinkers and the rest try to keep it a secret. Out of all of them, the person who I am certain is in the most dire circumstances has never been visibly drunk around me or anyone else we work with. But all the signs are there, neon bright.

I can't say it enough times so I'll just evangelize to you brothers quickly. If you need to self-medicate, then learn to utilize marijuana on a regular basis. Of all the things you can choose it will fuck you up the least in the long run. I love drinking but if I suddenly realized that I was dependent, I would go cold turkey that instant. If you're a slow burn progressive alcoholic, as most are, you won't realize how deep you're into it until you're in crisis. The genetic wasters were all made to face their problems in their 20s, even teens. They cleaned up, or else prison, death, homelessness, other brutal consequences. They're out of the picture or sober. Escaping this early fate lulls many of you into thinking that you're just fine, even as you go to sleep with a mushy forebrain five nights a week.

You brothers in your 30s who think you've hit some kind of sweet spot: you haven't. You're on the slow ride. I'm not saying don't drink. By all means, drink. But the second you think you really need it? Like, nothing else is going to do for you what alcohol is doing? You need to let it go. Let it go without regret. Pick up weed if you crave inebriation. You'll lose weight, feel better in the mornings, and you won't wear the physical signs of your addiction like a vasodilated badge.

I work with this one guy. Excellent attorney. Well known in his field, all the proper credentials and background signals. Fine to work with and doesn't display most of the ticks and obsessions that you see in seasoned biglawyers. He's fresh out of his third marriage, his kids hate him, his face is a patchwork of rosacea and broken blood vessels, he smells like fetid liquor sweat every other day, and he lives like a pig. He pays people to do almost everything for him because he can't manage on his own and he no longer cares about his lifestyle. He eats like a garbage disposal. No more marriages because even the money grubbing divorcee shrews can't stand to be with him on a physical level. He doesn't have much wealth to show for his years of grinding and everything it did to him. He'll never be able to detach from the bottle without forced detox and a new career, the latter being nearly impossible. And nobody cares enough about him anymore to push for change. He's late 50s but looks borderline elderly. Ten years ago he was decent looking, fit, socially inclined guy with happy teenaged children despite the marriages. Now he's a fucking puddle. His fingers are mangled from all the falls over the years.

Smoke weed, brothers. Smoke it up and don't look back.

Alcohol is a mind-boggling scourge of the middle and working class but our drinking culture prevents us from openly acknowledging this. When I see intergenerational alcoholism at barbecues and stuff, I constantly wonder what those people would be like if all their ancestors and every other person in the family wasn't a casual alcoholic.

Added this to my favorites. It's so true. I'm in my late twenties and already starting to hate and detach from friends who are OBSESSED with drinking and want to do it every other night. They think they're in the majority but they're not. They're just slow-reveal alcoholics.

Mostly men who do this. They want to let you know right away that they enjoy a drink or two, wink wink. They will be elated if you indulge in drinks with them. They want to tell you stories about other times they drank. They will inevitably instruct you on the right way to drink and the right things to drink. Drinking is wildly important to them. They need you to know they're good at it and they're unapologetic. You're a proper man if you drink, although the drinking must resemble their own. They're the guy that insisted on always being the one carrying the case of beer into party when they were teenagers. They wanted to be the alcohol guy even at that age. It matters to them on a different level.

Not necessarily alcoholics but who can stand that bullshit in any context?

No, not at all. Why the fuck does everyone think I'm a teetotaller when I absolutely drink? This isn't a "let's go and get a drink." This is a person who basically can't socialize unless there is alcohol and believes that just drinking isn't enough. Instead, they do all this stupid shit like declare that the bartender isn't making X drink right and to let THEM show you how to make it. It is a type and it is obnoxious.

I think there are some studies or something that say this is the sweet spot for longevity. Small amount of daily alcohol battles heart disease although it might just be because it acts as a blood thinner, no different than aspirin. But I think much beyond that and you're moving in the wrong direction.

I don't mean for this thread to advocate abstinence or reject drunkenness. I made it because I see all these people around me completely oblivious to their consumption when they should be more mindful than ever.

Yes. See link below. You actually have to drink a lot before mortality rates increase (like 6 a day). But I think the problem is that some people really go off the deep end. But it's also true that many people don't and benefit from it.

The people that are likely to drink six a day are likely to eventually drink 16 a day. A surprisingly small minority of society is responsible something like 75% of all alcohol consumption.

Problem drinking is different for everyone but I would never say someone had a problem if the only evidence offered was daily consumption. For centuries eople used to drink a little bit throughout the day, often because there was nothing else potable on hand. Beer really was for breakfast.

This is of course the answer. Mortality rates are LOWER for those that drink 1-2 per day than those that drink zero. (Even controlling for former, reformed alcoholics)

I did a poor job of describing this guy. It's a difficult task. It's like you take a very good life trajectory launchpad, then soak it all in scotch and light it on fire. His mind is slowly slipping due to some kind of booze-induced early onset dementia. He's getting whiny, anxious, and unable to adapt with his industry. Everyone notices to some extent but he's still too useful for anyone to pipe up so long as nothing major happens.

I predict he'll live for less than a decade once an accident or intervention forces him out of the workforce.

I never enlist others to drink. I have my bar so I am never alone. I like drinking at home alone. And when I do drink with others, it is their idea.

I used to drink for sport and try new things, but now I have a firmly defined set of preferences.

I guess I could go into something about a middle-aged biglawyer making extensive efforts to communicate his alcohol use to an internet forum by faking ridiculous typos and live-blogging his half-bullshit nights out at 'his bar,' but what's the point? You're a good poster but people who tend to be self-congratualtory about their alcohol consumption usually come stock with many other obnoxious qualities.

Just late to the party. Was working. Deals got to close.

I don't disagree, but smoking pot makes a lot of people lazy. Drinking makes me motivated. When I was sober, I was a terrible lawyer. When I was drinking hard every night, I was a great lawyer.

A lot of very successful people were heavy drinkers. Churchill being the archetype.

I am not here to demonize drinking and I think many people, myself included, lead a better life with substances.

I am here to tell people who are thoughtlessly rolling into a huge alcohol problem to snap the fuck out of it and pay attention to what they're doing to themselves.

For every Churchill or Tchaikovsky who is better with booze, there are 10,000 poor wretches who ruin their lives and get nothing but misery from their casual vice.

Most experienced weed smokers don't really struggle with munchies, particularly with all our modern, highly engineered strains of marijuana. If you're very susceptible to that it's easy enough to eat normally before you get fucked up.

I like the occasional burst of appetite. Get really high then eat some gnarly fast food. It's wonderful from time to time.

i'm like this guy's twin except ive never been married, dont drink or smoke weed and am a shitty attorney. wtf.

He's late 40s and looks almost 60. Ten years ago he was decent looking, fit, socially inclined guy with happy teenaged children despite the marriages. Now he's a fucking puddle.

State your objection to weed before I engage you further.

No but seriously, I am not some weed zealot who thinks its completely harmless. But relatively speaking, it's the better choice for many of us. I need to get out of my own head and substance abuse is the most realistic way to reliably accomplish this. What do you find so problematic with this bountiful natural herb grown from the good earth?

Very easy to get around this issue in every day life thanks to GC but getting high at work would just mean I take 25% longer to do a 25% shittier job at everything.

There are consequences to weed, short term and long, but it's nothing compared to alcohol.

OP, not drinking at al INCREASES mortality substantially. Drinking about 2 a day drops your morality risk substantially. Reduces stress etc. This has been shown in many many studies which control for/exclude former reformed alcoholics. Don't assume that everyone who has a couple drinks a day will be an alcoholic eventually.

Two drink limit seems overly strict. Most men who drink regularly don't start to mentally lose any control until around four drinks. If you need to get through four drinks any time you're drinking, however, then you should reread the OP several times.

Four would be where someone might raise an eyebrow, but ultimately that means two doubles are two large glasses of wine, if we're talking about the actual standardized units of alcohol. It might not be the healthiest consumption pattern but you'd have to be very sensitive to alcohol to wreck your life with that schedule.

I think that once life filters out the uncontrollable drunks, the most at-risk remaining group are the very secretive drinkers who can hold it together for years despite intense, compulsive boozing. You're also going to find a high degree of denial in this group despite the fact that they actively deal with their drinking most days. That's a really vicious feedback loop.

They're not hard to spot and I discussed this. The permissive nature of young adult life enables the bad genetic alcoholics to go off the rails immediately and they either sink or swim.

People of indigenous descent should treat alcohol very, very carefully. It's not some cultural mythology or a joke.

Most of the Irish stuff, on the other hand, is cultural bullshit, although you can make some arguments for a genetic factor when you look at the entrenched Scotch-Irish poverty hinterlands in the SE and Appalachia.

Old lonely drunks are the worst. Social isolation already fast tracks you for an early grave. Combine that with a robust poison habit and you get these doddering wrecks of personhood who breed equal measures of contempt and pity in everyone they encounter. What's worse, they usually know it and have long since accepted their lot.

I just want to briefly emphasize that denial in your 30s seems to be the main precursor to truly ruinous alcoholism in your 40s. These people all coast through this period, probably their most productive and essential runway to a comfortable career in full blown middle age. You can hang on through your 30s because your body hasn't fallen apart yet, you can dive into work, and your family is too dependent on your earning power to really take a stand.

But holy fuck brother brothers, it catches up. 40s is the meltdown decade when your mind and body truly degrade. Relationships sour, patience dwindles, and your ability to hide your dependent nature is cast into the sunlight. You see at-risk drinkers in their 30s and turn away because it's easier to gossip about it casually. Nobody wants to stare these people in the eye at this point. You see them in their 40s and everyone either openly shakes their head or takes the next step toward confrontation. Intervene with yourself if you think there's a chance this could be you. Fix it yourself before everyone around you makes it happen.

People treat you like a hero if you conquer alcohol dependence at the right time. Recognize when you're going down the tubes and will be forced to rehabilitate or make serious compromises. You'll have to give up the booze or everything else anyway. Make it your choice and you come out smelling like a rose. Take an ultimatum and you never seriously recover in the eyes of everyone around you.

I made the thread because I see the same thing pretty often. The people who are most at risk seem to have a powerful blind spot or denial attitude when it comes to their drinking habits. I feel like a lot of these people would significantly dial it down if they could just take a step back and view their alcohol use objectively. For some reason, probably several, that's a hard hurdle to clear.

I'm definitely not saying everyone who regularly drinks has a problem or there is some obvious hard cap on the number of drinks you can have in an average day that makes you a problematic drinker. I drink all the time.

Is it problem drinking if you almost never get drunk?

I get drunk maybe 3 times a year. One time is always at my firms holiday party. I have a high tolerance so that might mean 12 drinks. Last night I had two bourbons and three small bottles of sake with dinner and was buzzed but not drunk. Do this once or twice a month at most.

During the week I will probably have the equivalent of 2 or 3 drinks three or four times a week. Usually while working.

Total volume I drink a lot but I don't think of myself as a drunk. Hard to see if there are physical effects. I am definitely dumber smoking eeed four days in a row.

Getting buzzed not drunk is the right look when you're in your 30s. Don't be afraid to get drunk in the right situation. But as a regular thing? What the fuck does this do for you? It's a feature of life in your teens and 20s for a handful of reasons. Those reasons don't really have much pull in your 30s unless you're defective in some way. You either have the terrible genetic addiction neurotransmitter wiring or you're recklessly self-medicating for mental illness.

Here is a different take:

I have never been a drinker. I have been drunk maybe 4 times in my life all around big events - changing job, losing a big trial. I have thrown up from alcohol two of those times. I never drank until I was 21. Was deathly afraid of getting caught and ruining academic career.

I am also very fat - turn to food for comfort.

I now work with people who are probably considered alcoholics. They don't drink beer, only hard liquor straight up and lots of it. I have had more to drink in the last 4 months than in my entire 35 years prior.

Strange thing: after drinking 3-4 whiskey/night while at trial, I slept better, didnt eat as much food, and generally didnt feel like shit all day. I think if i kept this up, I would lose weight and feel better. I just don't ike drinking enough.

Thoughts?//

The nature of substance use is that it rapidly loses efficacy. You'd flirt with easily avoidable booze dependency late in life only to reap some minor benefits that are guaranteed to dwindle.

Lose weight and exercise. It would likely do a lot to improve the symptoms you describe and it will improve other aspects of your life as well. Conversely liquor will wreck your health quickly if it's a daily thing.

I had a similar experience. Rarely ever drank most of my life. When I did start drinking more it was absolutely a net positive. Felt like it helped anxiety, more social life, better sleep, etc. But you definitely develop a tolerance. I still think it is overall positive but you can't keep up drinking consistently without negatives coming in.

If you didn't binge drink consistently throughout your late teens and 20s, you can probably get a away with years of heavy drinking without any real long term impairment.

Consider that many of us were blacking out or close to it minimum once a week, 50 weeks a year give or take. From like ages 16-30. I mean I heard that's like average or whatever.

Anyway many people you know have ingested oceans of alcohol and you wouldn't necessarily suspect they have ill effects from it. They probably do long term but a person like you will be fine after years of routine drinking.

Calories are de minimis. Probably not as enjoyable if you are not used to be high but you can take very small dosages.

It's really not a pain in the ass, it's just unfamiliar and intimidating to you. Take your partner or some friends, go rent a place on the beach or a cabin, take weed, get high all weekend. You'll love it.

Dying of alcoholism is miserable. We live in an abundant world where your old age can be virile and largely free of pain. Wrecking your body with constant inebriation because you don't know how else to live life is not really about pleasure and fun. And to the extent that it is at all, you'll destroy your ability to access those feelings with alcoholism. Old drunks are typically immeasurably unhappy people who swing back and forth between different flavors of suffering.

Alcohol is poison and it never really appealed to me. I always like getting drunk, and will still get drunk 5-10 times a year (weddings, holiday parties, etc.), but the hangover/fear the following morning (which, at least for me, lasts the entire day) is not worth it.

I've smoked weed daily for the last 10 years -- and would go through years where I was high 24/7. I never had an alcohol problem so I can't compare it to booze, but there are certainly serious long term consequences of smoking weed on a daily basis. I have a shit memory, am lazy as hell (and I was lazy before I was regularly smoking), and constantly feel like there's a "haze" or "fog" in my head. I feel dumber...I don't speak/formulate thoughts as well.

I travel to Asia a fair bit for work, and I obviously can't smoke when I'm over there. There is noticeable improvement in my health, memory, and overall mental functions. Nonetheless, I always end up picking it back up when I return to the states.

My head wants me to stop smoking weed, so I can be sharper and so I can feel like I'm not shortchanging myself. My heart likes to get stoned, and wonders if my life would actually be any better if I was a longterm sobermo.

You need to figure out a different weed routine if you're living with constant brain fog and lethargy. Have you tried vaping, switching your routine, and different strains? Most people can overcome those side effects with some tweaks to how they use marijuana.

short of sending out FB messages to ppl I haven't seen in like 20 years I don't think that's true. I still wouldn't have anywhere good to do it anyways.

So i used to be one of those people who drank all the time because it was necessary for social interaction. I was really proud of how much I drank and would push people to take shots and bullshit like that.

But since I got married I don't have social interaction anymore so I don't bother drinking. Also alcohol helps pick up slores which I no longer do.

I still get fucked up at weddings and xmas parties and the occasional trip with friends and will drink a bottle of wine or two with my wife twice a month, but I really have cut down a lot.

Sounds like you don't have the poison gene. That's a huge life advantage. Being able to enjoy the occasional big night of drinking without making poison part of your routine is truly ideal.

That being said, brother I have heard you talking about knocking back scotches while you pour over the loan docs Sunday afternoon. That is the lawyer's trap house and be wary of the instinct to dull the pain of work with booze. You don't even have depressive tendencies so the palliative drinking a true waste in your case.

LOL brothers, due to some big weekends I think I'm somewhere between 150-175 drinks in the month of June. That must be in the danger zone. Unusual for me to hit it that hard these days but it wasn't a struggle at all. About 100 of those were LIGHT AMERICAN BEERS consumed around bodies of water.

TITCOP. I leave the drinking for legitimate social occasions and the non-competitive round of golf with friends. I'm done with having a drink on a worknight to "unwind", which would usually turn into 2-3 minimum. Now, the routine is come home, dinner with family, get kids to bed, hit the gym until 10, come home and have a relaxing smoke and then read or practice golf until bedtime. Absolutely no observable acute detriment to my physical or mental health.

My neighbor, on the other hand, is a couple of years younger than me and a real hard drinker. He looks a good 7-10 years older than me, fat, balding. His drinking is causing problems in his marriage and his kids have behavior issues since he loses it with them when he's wasted. Guy looks like he could drop dead at any minute. He also is always looking to sneak drinks away from his wife, so he ends up spending a lot of $$$ just stopping at bars on the way home from work.

I haven’t had a drink in six months and feel great. I’m so much calmer and steadier at all times. I feel invincible and mentally strong as fuck. I am a bit duller and bored though. I’ve put on some weight eating sweets instead of drinking but I’m getting it under control

No but I would usually have one or two a day and then binge a few times a year, every couple years in a dangerous way.

Light daily drinking shouldn’t have a noticeable impact on daily cognition and well being. I’m very clearly encouraging people to take it easy on the poison but I see little advantage to being overly reactive and paranoid about alcohol use. Binging a few times a year is only dangerous in the sense that you’re facing increased peril any time you are heavily inebriated.

Whats more pathetic between being a grown adult in your 20-40s addicted to alcohol or being addicted to marijuana?

weed aligns closer to the word pathetic for me. it's like a "shame on you" vibe whereas alcoholism is more "oh what a pity". similar but different

There is just something profoundly pathetic about a grown man scouring his city for marijuana, claiming he cannot live without it.

I agree alcoholism is a more sympathetic proposition.
