Having a pregnant, working wife made me realize how much easier it is for men.

The premise of the OP is that women should be working. I find that premise problematic (to borrow a word from the lib lexicon) to begin with. Women are supposed to make homes and nurture offspring. What you describe as almost a burden I think it to be a privilege and a duty. A real woman enjoys doing this and could give a shit about who beats her to some soul-sucking "leadership" position.
You are also seem like a beta male. http://xoxohth.com/thread.php?thread_id=3736565&mc=12&forum_id=2 Possibly married to a high-t woman?

you write as if the end all and be all of life is climbing a corporate ladder as fast as possible as early as possible
most people even with no gaps can climb just 1 to 3 rungs. a mat leave or two won't make a huge difference in the end.
the issue is more once women have babies, they don't actually want the demands of high profile careers (late night dinners with clients, business trips, around the clock hours, being on call).
but yea latest stats show women are actually ahead of men in various career measures until 30s (i.e. true dealbreaker is motherhood, not breasts/vaginas/estrogen) and then it all goes down hill.

As someone said above, there's trade-offs to everything and costs to each.
For the company, the work still needs to get done. So they can either ask other workers to pick up the slack, or train and hire a temp. Is it fair to the other co-workers to not get credit for taking on extra tasks to cover for your wife? If she had to cover for someone on medical leave for months, would you be pissed if that didn't count in her favor toward a promotion over the person who went on leave? And if the company hires a temp, now they're paying someone else while also paying her for her leave. They have to use resources to find and train this person for just a short time. In either case, there is a cost for the company and workers to bear for your decision to have a kid.
For your wife, she chose to have a kid. She knows what that entails. And afterwards, as others said, she will not be the same worker. She won't be able to work late to meet a deadline. She'll need more flexibility to work from home. She'll have to take more time off if the baby or care provider is sick. That all comes with he motherhood package. It's simple biology. Unless you want to do all that for her to minimize the impact on her career.
It may not be "fair," but not everything is. You're introducing a new person into your life who requires 24-hour care. That comes with sacrifices.

They were rolling out this gender equality training at my job a few years ago that was filled with insights like the OPs and it was a disaster and they stopped. The whole thing broke down in most of the sessions when they expanded from race and gender, and started trying to confront other forms of bias, and how it really comes down to empathizing with each person's unique circumstances. The obvious result was each session breaking down into:
"Well I'm not a woman, but I have a special needs child, and that takes a lot out of me, honestly. There are all these meetings during work hours with specialists that my wife and I need to make, and special treatments and after-school programs that cost a ton of money..."
"I'm not a woman or a minority, but I had cancer last year and it was really hard. My team helped me out, but I was still working while going through chemo, and that's no joke."
"Yeah we have my mom at home and she has Alzheimer's and it's really hard every day."
"My daughter has had major mental health problems, and is anorexic, and there are days when I can barely put one foot in front of the other."
Basically every manager that sent employees to these sessions started to see all sorts of new requests for accommodations from all these employees who suddenly discovered how bad they had it. And the effect in terms of raising awareness re how much harder women have it in the workplace was negative--the surveys showed that most people came in thinking women were more entitled to special privileges than when they completed the training. It was so fucking funny.

"The corporate world is systemically unfair to women."
I wouldn't say it's unfair so much as its interests and women's interests are incompatible.
Pro basketball is rough on short whites. Maybe they're better off in other fields instead of whining that the game is unfair and they want to play.
You also could easily, from a business owner's perspective, say having to hire women is systemically unfair to the company.
That said, fuck GC.
