In the 1990's RadioShack execs saw that cell phones were the future. They were correct about this. They decided to invest heavily in cell phones and try to rebrand as THE place you went to get a cell phone. RadioShack employees were all trained to focus on cell phone sales, and the rest of their business was essentially neglected. At its peak, 50% of all revenue RadioShack made was from cell phones.

Then the cell phone service providers (the Verizons, PrimeCos, etc.) all started their own stores. The cell phone rug got pulled out from under RadioShack and the remaining business was badly out of date and neglected.

That's how hard business is: RadioShack saw the future and still couldn't maek it.

it was apparently a very paperwork intensive business for Radio Shack. They would sell a customer both a phone and a contract with a provider. RadioShack employees would spend hours filing paperwork with the providers setting up the contract and neglect the batteries and headphones and shit part of the business

I have always been confused by radioshack, you go in hoping that MAYBE they have used gamecubes or C batteries or something and are just terribly dismayed.

Eh... it's an interesting b-school anecdote that they were able to keep the business going for as long as they did by changing the focus of the business

The reality is they fucked themselves by never opening up stores with *much more* square footage.

30 years of exploding demand for consumer electronics and Radioshack's response was to stick with their shitty little mall leases everywhere

Their business model was to be within a 15 min drive of 98% of the population or whatever. It’s tough to break a schtick you’ve run for years ... just ask wmtp.

there's always been a demand for the geek niches that they are suited to address, but the various geek niches that have become prominent aren't suited for little stores
