In the context of price, performance and style.

I was dead set on buying a Triumph Daytona, but they are ridiculously expensive in my city compared to what they appear to be going for in different parts of the country. Before I commit to the idea of a weekend trip to pick up a bike, I thought I wold see if I am overlooking other options.

I'm tempted to just say fuck it and go with a used local Husqvarna 701 that was just listed on craigslist a couple days ago. Yes, I know this isn't a sports bike, but they look fun as fuck.

Yes, I appreciate XO is a horrible source for information on sports bikes, but I thought I would send out this hail mary on the off chance a poster or two are into sports bikes.

Indeed, they are.

There is a small chance I may snag a significantly more chill job in the near future and have more free time. Getting back into bikes in a big way would be a 180 use of that new free time.

What makes the more expensive euro bikes eg BMW/Ducati/Husqvarna "better" besides kind of being boutique-ish? Do they just feel more solid, like a Porsche kinda?

Don't mean to sound retarded, it's just that the Honda's and stuff seem pretty sweet

With respect to the Triumph Daytona, the difference in price is more of an issue in my particular city.

As for the other bikes, the Euro bikes tend to be more niche than the offerings from the Japs, which is largely a product of economic reality and resulting divergence of marketing strategies.

For example, BMW's bread and butter for several decades is giant, adventure/touring bikes. There is nothing that comes close to to the R1200GS. Of course, they cost an arm and a leg.

Ducati strives to be an aspirational brand, akin to Ferrari. This is especially true with Ducati's top of the line sport bike, the 1299. However, as the popularity of the Ducati Monster waned following its redesign several years back, and with decrease popularity of sports bikes relative to other types of bikes, Ducati has pursued a more mainstream marketing strategy with options and pricing, to the point where a new Monster is a fairly decent value proposition, even if you don't care about the Ducati brand.

HD Sportster.

its usually driven by women cuz its smaller than the touring hogs, and therefore has been well looked after and by well looked after I mean they are usually parked in the garage 360 days of the year.

JFC . . .

I can appreciate the desire for a giant, HD cruiser. It's not my thing, but I get it.

I have no idea why anyone would buy a Sportster (or Dyna).

My ideal purchase would be a mechanically sound bike that has been beat to shit cosmetically, which admittedly is like searching for a needle in a haystack. For this type of bike, I am looking to spend approximately $3k, give or take $1k.

If I can't find my ideal bike, then I will just look for the best possible value, in the $5k-$6k range.

In other words, I am more concerned with finding a good value given my needs than total cost.
