Your point about "no life" certainly does not apply to b-schools. Don't know where you got this misinformation from. I suppose it's true at MFin programs where you spend your time doing stochastic calculus with Chinese immigrants who take showers once a week.

Very thoughtful post. It's sad, but many of us derive our self-worth from pedigree and accomplishments. I think this is especially true for guys who were not the the cool jocks in high school and are consequently trying to compensate for that.

I still remember being nearly suicidal when I didn't get into harvard, yale, princeton. I've changed a lot, but now i'm sweating over getting into a top 5 MBA program and fantasizing about how fun and awesome my life will be if i get in.

Also it seems like most relationships get broken up in b-school. They call that "black october" or something. I guess when there are so many alpha accomplished attractive people in one setting, fireworks are bound to fly. Pretty intense stuff. My best friend met his gf in the first week of school. Meeting girls in b-school definitely seem easier than trying to meet girls at bars/clubs, the vast majority of whom I have nothing in common with.

Without delving into too much details, I had a hard time socially post-college due to a number of reasons. Lately, however, I have been going out more, attending networking events, and trying to be more active socially. Although I'm happier now than I was say 3 years ago, I still don't think there's anything I can do now that will come close to b-school in terms of excitement and fun. B-school is such a unique environment, with a plethora of activities and opportunities, that it's not something one can replicate while living in a big city as a working professional. no, I'm not a virgin.

The Chicago social scene is awful for outsiders, in my opinion. All my good friends here are also transplants. I just don't quite click with the typical big 10 frat boys.

Yes, I'm definitely applying to columbia and will probably visit next spring or so. If I really like it I might apply early decision.

Didn't know that about Wharton, but I'm not too surprised. The social scene there is absolutely sick. I know for a fact that I will be slaying tons of chicks at a top b-school.

For nye, my b-school buddies are literally all over the world: tokyo, paris, sydney, rio, etc. Meanwhile i'm stuck in fucking chicago due to work and can't find a decent party to go to. I don't think any rational person can argue that my social life won't be exponentially better if i were in b-school right now.

Sounds fun but not worth $50K. So you basically get free food and drinks and be surrounded by models who are being paid to be nice to you.

I would much rather be at a HBS or Wharton party.

I do not have kids, but I'm blessed to have several adorable nephews and nieces. I only get to see them like once a year, and not a day goes by that I don't think about them.

My oldest nephew just turned 12, so he is about to embark on his formative adolescence years. Rebellion against his parents, crushes on girls, getting in trouble, trying to be cool, will all become a part of his life. Hard to imagine since I still see him as that tiny baby I once held in my arms. But he will continually grow up. In light of this, there are several things I want my nephew to do in the coming years, which seems obvious now to me with the hindsight of age and experience.

Be a good son and brother. The older I get, the more I appreciate the importance of family. I hope my nephew respects his parents and acts as a good role model to his younger siblings. I deeply regret not being a better son when I was younger, and this is something I can't take back as I see my parents age rapidly.

Be well-rounded and happy. Taking things way too seriously at a young age is a recipe for disaster. This does not mean that one should not work hard to achive goals; rather, he needs to enjoy his teenage years by surrounding himself with good friends and non-academic activities that give him joy. Balance is key here.

Play a sport. Thankfully my nephew already plays several sports. I think playing a sport in high school builds confidence, team skills, and leadership. It's one of those things that every teen should do if he's physically able to do so. Aside from general physical health, the benefits of playing a sport are many. Looking back, I really wish I was more active in this arena.

Start studying for the SAT early. This may seem to contradict my earlier points, but I don't think so. I want my nephew to get into the best college he can, and I would shed tears of joy if here were to get into the HYP trinity, a goal that eluded me in high school and still haunts me to this day. I did not take the SAT seriously enough, thinking that my super high grades and extracurricular awards would somehow magically carry me through. I know for a fact that my scores were the main reason I was waitlisted at one of HYP rather than admitted, based on a conversation I had with a senior admissons officer regarding my waitlist status. I do not want my nephew to make the same mistake and am urging my sister to get the ball rolling on that front.

Date early and often. No, I do not think my nephew should be some sort of a player who mistreats women. I do however want him to be comfortable with girls, learn the art of flirting, and go on dates, homecomings, and proms. This is part of becoming a man, and missing this development will hinder one's social progress immensely. Again, this is one area where I totally missed out, and although I became more social past college, the lack of this experience in high school definitely stunted my growth.

, I respectfully disagree with your characterization of Wharton. I partied there last fall; it was a fucking blast. There actually aren't that many chinese and indian fob's who can't speak english. I have no idea where this stereotyping came from. The first-year class at Wharton is now 45% women, with lot of attracitve ones who worked in fashion/media/marketing, etc. And there's tons of latin americans and europeans to boot. The same goes for HBS, although their women ratio is only like 35%. I do know for a fact that there are several ex-models who are at HBS now.

Also, HBS guys do extremely well with the girls in boston. It's sort of a running joke among the guys there about how easy it is to slay chicks at schools like bu, bc, northeastern, wellesley, etc. As one friend put it, "it's so easy it's like shooting fish in a barrel.

I feel you dude. I'm in my late 20's, so i'm way past the sports bar phase. And I don't like nightclubs because they're too crowded, and i don't dance. I do however make an exception for the nice vegas clubs like XS, but that's a whole different story.

My good friends moved out of the city too, so it's hard to meet new people at my age. It seems like going to business school might be the best way to revive my social life and make life more exciting.

Yup. B-school alums in general like their experience. But every single HBS student and alum I know have said unequivocally that it was the best 2 years of their lives. And this includes people who went to fun state schools for undergrad and had great social lives. Even compared to college, HBS was far more fun.

All my friends who went to top schools said it was easily the best 2 years of their lives. Nothing before or since has even compared.

One friend at HBS said it was tons of drinking, banging undergrad chicks in boston, traveling all across the world, theme parties, etc. And after all that you come out with a great job. Truly living the dream.

Point taken but consider the following facts.

In college, I was severely overweight and wore thick glasses. I had a hard time maintaining eye contact with people. After college, I went through both a physical and inner transformation, marked by a rigorous diet and exercise regimen which resulted in me losing around 70 pounds of fat. I'm now at about 8% body fat and in great shape for someone my age. In addition, after I moved to Chicago, I went out to bars/clubs around 3-4 times a week. I learned a lot about the complexities of social dynamics during this period. Although I no longer go out that much, those lessons are still ingrained within me. And finally, in college, I had no money, which is certainly not the case with me now.

Basically, my point is that I'm no longer the same person I was in college. I went through a grand metamorphoses in every way imaginable. I have ZERO doubt that I would slay chicks in b-school, whether my classmates or girls in other programs. I swear in the name of my beloved nephews and niece that this will happen if I'm fortunate enough to get in.

Everyone at Penn knows that the Wharton MBA guys are the hottest items on the market. This is true at pretty much any top school. I don't know why naive WSO college kids are so surprised by this.

Lately I've been struggling with social confidence, especially around chicks. I'm in really good shape and have a decent job, but i feel pretty mediocre compared to finance rockstars who are making like $500K+. I feel like not making a lot of money and not having gone to a truly elite school like HBS is seriously undermining my confidence.

Advice and thoughts on how to break this negative cycle would be greatly appreciated.

B-school is a unique life experience that cannot be easily replicated. You don't want to miss out (FOMO: Fear of Missing Out), so students invariably spend tons of money on parties, travels, career treks, etc. So the total costs is easily $250K+. If I get in next year, I will probably take out around $200K in loans; paying it off will be a bitch but more than worth it.

it seems like you're still stuck in the college mode of looking at the world, where the loud-mouthed fratguy gets all the chicks. Reality is a bit different once you're out of college and in the real world. How do you explain my friends at hbs and wharton (average looking guys) who get tons of girls? Women love successful men; you're only lying to yourself if you believe otherwise. And yes, prestige and pedigree play a critical role in shaping a man's social confidence.

On a more important note, last night, we were hanging out at hour hotel lobby bar, which is actually considered a Miami hotspot. Without exaggerating, I have never seen so many hotties in one sitting in my entire life. There was literally no girl below a 7, and my neck is still hurting from all the double, triple, heck quadruple, takeaways.

Seeing so many hot women really clarified some things for me. Here are some of my thoughts that came to my mind.

I NEVER want to get married. It was amusing seeing married men at the bar lusting after these young girls while their wives were standing next to them. Marriage really is for men who don't have better options.

I deeply regret not fucking more girls when i was in my 20's. I think I would be happier and secure in myself if I had been more sexually active.

Prestige and money just don't mean as much if you're not leveraging them to bang gorgeous women. Sure, HBS and working at an elite firm are great in of themselves, but if you worked that hard to accumulate those prestige points but is married to or dating a 5, that really sucks monkey's balls.

But yeah, look, you don't go to b-school for the classroom learning although I'm sure there are some interesting courses. As everyone else said, it's for the re-branding, exit opportunities, networking, and social experience. Whether or not that's worth the costs is a personal decision.

You're right that MBA is a different kind of fun. It's more upscale and classy and more oriented towards travelling to exotic locales and partying at nice lounges/clubs. I'm older, so that's exactly what I'm looking for.

NYC is awful when it comes to women. For a city its size, it has a surprisingly low proportion of hot women. East coast in general sucks in that regard. I'm willing to bet that certain parts of Chicago, like lincoln park and river north, have better talent than all of manhattan.

My best friend called last night. The guy is currently a first-year at a top 5 mba program, and he was telling me about his winter break thus far. His classmates went on a ski trip to colorado, where they got wasted and fucked like rabbits. In his words, "pretty much everyone has hooked up by now. It's really easy to get laid in b-school." Next, he went on a career trek in silicon valley, visiting start-up tech firms on the cutting edge. And now he is on his way to New Zeland.

Fucking SICK life. Can any non-mba folks on WSO beat that? I doubt it.

the problem is not that i can't meet girls. The issue is that i'm having a hard time meeting smart attractive women who are also single. In Chicago basically every high-quality woman over the age of 25 is taken. Now, I agree that b-school has a bad ratio (although wharton is now 45% women, and other schools are improving in that aspect). But there are just a lot of opportunities available for single men, through numerous interactions in the classroom, various clubs, social events, etc. And as I said before, the MBA guys can always branch out into other schools at their university.

This is right. Boston is more expensive than smaller towns, and HBS students constantly go out to really nice restaurants, clubs, not to mention frequent weekend trips abroad. Going to germany for oktoberfest, weekend rendezvous in miami or vegas, etc., are quite common.

Socially I think b-schools are great for people to meet significant others. Most of my friends in school have met their girlfriends, and in all cases they're serious relationships. These are guys who had a tough time meeting girls in major cities either because of a busy work schedule and/or they just couldn't find people they could relate to. At these top schools, there is an implicit understanding that almost everyone there passed a certain threshold of intelligence, accomplishments, work ethic, and ambition. Admissions acts as a powerful signaling and filtering mechanism. Thus, my guy friends don't have to worry that the cute girl in their section is some dummy who only cares about big 10 college football or the latest kim kardashian gossip.

The issue is NOT that i don't have friends, can't get girls, or can't go skiing. I think a lot of other posters have missed the point. My main assertion is that business school, due to its unique nature, allows one to pursue his academic, professional, and social interests with almost complete freedom and latitude. Given that I'm totally burned out from a job I don't like too much, I am craving what b-school has to offer. It will allow me to re-fuel, make great friends, and hopefully get on a career trajectory that actually interests me.

At the elite schools, students spend most of their time partying, socializing, and traveling. Yes, they work hard to get jobs, just like everyone else, but the pressure is not as nearly as intense.

This is why for me personally, anything below a M7 is not worth the cost. If I do go to b-school and drop that kind of cash, I want to party like a fucking rockstar for 2 years and leave with fond memories that will last me until the day I die.

In my case however, I don't like my job, and socially I don't have a lot of options due to my circumstances. A top b-school will open up a floodgate of career opportunities, and socially it will provide me with an experience that I can only dream about. There's nothing like being a young healthy person who is surrounded for 2 years by smart, interesting, accomplished people, and partying and travelling your ass off with them. That is something that money cannot buy.

you're making a false assumption-that people in business school are mainly hanging out with their classmates in hopes of getting something from them. Although i'm sure there are people who think that way, it is a far cry from what actually goes on socially. The fact of the matter is, students at top business schools genuinely want to meet new people and have fun. Lifelong memories and friendships are forged during this 2-year period.

By "smart," I'm not looking for a rocket scientist. I mean women who are reasonably intelligent, knowledgeable, and successful. I can't just talk about stupid shit all the time.

One of the major disadvantages of Chicago as opposed to NYC is that virtually all quality women who are 25+ are married, engaged, or in long-term relationships. Given that I'm 30 years old and would like to meet someone it's been quite frustrating. I have gone to young professionals events, tried match, and tried to meet women at bars (which always ends up being a debacle).

Aside from going to a top business school (which are filled with smart attractive women and a very easy place to meet quality women), what else can I do? Advice would be greatly appreciated. My social life is awful right now, and I'm trying to make improvements.

Yes, this is technically unethical. Yes, this is bizarre and desperate. But I'm wondering how effective the following strategy could be:

Start getting actively involved in a gay professionals organization; try to assume a leadership role.

Write a compelling essay about coming out of the closet last year and having to tell your conservative christian parents about it and learning to become comfortable with one's identity.

Given how obsessed top b-schools are with "diversity" and filling the various "niche" groups in their incoming class, I'm wondering if this strategy can have any merit. Obviously it's unethical, and I feel bad even having to resort to this, but given how badly I want to get in and my next app is my last chance, seems like it could be worth a shot.

He told me in no uncertain terms that HSW are out and that booth/sloan/columbia are possible if I raise my gmat and do something outside of work that stands out. He basically said, "look you're an asian guy in trading at a company almost no one has heard of. HSW is not gonna happen for you." I actually liked his candor in that regard.
