I'm a catholic mutt of a all sorts of bullshit heritage. Like everyone else, I want a second passport.
1.) Ireland. My dad's mum was born on the island before moving to NY in her teens (she had lived here on and off for years). I have the best claim here, BUT my grandparents fudged some papers and she has a US birth certificate and passport as a natural born citizen (she has an Irish birth certificate with her real birthday and a second birth certificate dated 8 months later with NYC as her birthplace). I could easily claim citizenship in Ireland here, but I'd have to purjure that I have no evidence to the contrary (the bullshit birth certificate they had drawn up in the 50s in NYC). Easy application at embassy, but I'd have to perjure myself.
2.) Hungary. I have a great grandfather from Budapest. I'm not granted citizenship under their laws, but I'm granted immediate "re-naturalization" even from abroad. The kick here is I need to speak Hungarian, which is not an Indo-European language (it's like Arabic, Finnish, Mandarin). Hard as fuck for a non-native to learn. I'm told that depending on the embassy officer testing you that day, it can be an actual test of fluency or some dude asking you "how are you" and "what color is the sky" and if you answer 2-3 questions you're good.
3.) Poland. I'd have to claim through a lawyer because my great grandmother was displaced by war to NYC. They tend to be sympathetic to these cases, but it would involve court + lawyer fees. I was quoted 5K by several reputable immigration firms.
4.) Italy. I have a great grandmother from Italy. Italy had a "citizenship passes through men only" law until 1948, and my great grandmother was born before 1948, so I would need to go to court to claim this. In Italian jurisprudence, the courts have decided that the pre-1948 sexism doesn't work under EU law, but their bureaucracy somehow doesn't recognize court decisions. So people with a perfect line of all male ancestors can claim citizenship in an embassy. I would need to go to court in Rome. I was quoted all-in $10K by two immigration firms, inclusive of pulling and apostilling all documents.

I think it's a realistic outcome. Irish press is considering it more and more a realistic outcome (if still a small minority view).
Troubles era resentments still existing in 2021 are overblown in media. They're felt, but they're only felt with the quickly-dying older generations. Part of this is there is no religion anymore, even in Ireland, among people under 45.
Younger generations have no real nationalistic fire.
Depending on how Brexit works out, I think there's at least a 25% chance it makes more sense for Ireland to tie its fortunes to the UK. This would have been unthinkable 20 year ago. An autonomous trade and open borders arrangement.

xo Poland, of course
Ireland is going shitlib and importing all kinds of people
Hungary is very shady and under Russia’s sway
Poland is conservative, hard working, homogenous, and most likely to survive any major external turmoil without major upheaval, at least on a 20-30 yr timeline
