I guess the issue here is still referring to her as the GOAT? Is there a dispute about whether she is the best female gymnast of all time? Or is it the timing of calling her that in light of quitting and the suggestion that getting bronze is the same as gold. This last point is something i've railed against for years with the tallying of "medal count" when we all know winning the gold is far better than winning silver or bronze.

Equipment, training and techniques all evolve. Those are external to the athlete themselves.

You cannot compare raw performance values across history.

Relative performance (ergo medals and gap vs. peers) is a much better metric, albeit imperfect. I would also add qualitative things like grit, determination, context. What Strugg did, for example. Or what Bruce Jenner did.

Using an American-centric example; on quantifiable physical metrics, Lebron is a better player than Jordan, but nobody is rushing to take the GOAT away from Jordan. This point is even starker if you do the same comparison with Bird, Chamberlain, Magic, etc.
