i was taught to drive by my dad, a guy with around 5m professional miles driven, and the shit he taught me to look out for, i realize, was basically him handing off his playbook that i didn't fully appreciate at the time because he took forever in teaching me how to drive. the first lesson alone was me in the passenger's seat listening to him verbalize his thoughts on the road for like 2 hours as he went down the turnpike for an hour, drove around a small city and then went back up an hour. it was fucking crazy to hear the thoughts of a professional driver. he called everyone's behavior "there is a guy coming up on my left who will hit the brakes before the car in front of him and then go into my lane in front of me without a signal and then pass the guy in front of me on the right and go back to the left lane in 5, 4, 3, 2..." *whap* exactly what he called happened. "you see that guy right there?" yeah. "he sucks getting girls and tries to get them drunk because he got no other way to do it." i learned to intuit what he was getting at.
he said you're not really watching cars, you're watching drivers. you're looking INTO the cars and seeing what they're doing and if you know how to read faces, postures, eyes, you know a ton.
you wanna freak out? drive and look only at drivers, not the cars, and you realize how completely distracted people are. eyes looking down in their laps, playing with their phones, you can tell when someone is having a conversation or who is not...it's really a psychology test. look at how many people speed up just to rest in someone's blind spot for no reason. that's an npc. they can't help it. but what's the difference between an npc and a moron? easy. npc floats into your blind spot in normal traffic. a moron does the same but with a tractor trailer. etc etc. |

I won't name the country, but it's mostly motorbike traffic in a lot of places, and the only rule is that you don't hit other people. You don't worry about them not hitting you, i.e. you don't try to anticipate where they're going and move out of the way, you just focus on not hitting the person in front of you and have faith that everyone else will do you the same courtesy. I knew too many people, particularly women, who who were raised to be pointedly nice and considerate of staff, whether maids/cleaners or waitstaff at restaurants or anyone else in a service position. But there is something patronizing and, yes, elitist, about being too nice and considerate of people who are working for you in a service capacity. It sounds counterintuitive but hidden within that niceness is a clear class hierarchy and disparity.
On the other hand, you do want to be pleasant and polite. I aim for a polite indifference. At a restaurant, a pleasant expression, a thank you, and a decent tip is all that is needed. Same with maids and gardeners and service workers. Rarely has failed me. |

I once dated a guy who had a friend who was crazy like this. He would always make up adventures and shit. Like " wow yesterday I was on the subway and this guy tried to pull out a gun and shoot people! I had to apprehend him, but everything turned out ok in the end. So glad I was there, otherwise people would have died, the media would have had to come, etc..." (He would always include something like the last sentence to cover his tracks - i.e. the media didn't have to come so there wouldn't be any record of this happening). I really think he was insane. He would also lie about smaller things.
I can understand people who lie to get out of trouble or to gain something, but he seemed to just get off on...deceiving people, one upping people. It was really weird and unsettling. |
