So my nephew is 5 years old, born biologically male. But since he was about 3½ he's shown a very strong preference to things that are culturally 'feminine' like pink clothes, dolls, wearing his cousin's dresses. Now I'm not a complete twit, and realize that's not anything unusual- these things are culturally defined as feminine for arbitrary reasons (in my understanding)

But beyond that, he recently has expressed his distaste for being a boy, and that he likes being 'like a girl.'

His parents (my brother and sister in law) arenot supportive. More than that they are being hostile to their sons desires, buying him the most ridiculous boys clothes (with skulls on it etc) and ignoring his requests for things like pink bedding.

He comes to our house with my mother about weekly, and we've been doing all we can to make it a safe space. He had dresses he is on, we do it nails and makeup together with my own kids (which has been a learning process for them) and we've also found some great picture books about trans kids that we mixed in with other books.

But of course our impact is limited. There's no negotiating with his parents-I'm realizing that they are transphobic, and beyond that they're pretty lousy parents anyway. My nephew is pretty badly behaved (irrespective of his gender identity struggle) because his parents are more interested in themselves than raising children properly.

So I don't see a way to broach the subject with them. Mum's trying but I'm nervous about causing a fight that leads to nephew not coming over anymore and kidding his safe space

What advice do people have? What can i do differently or better? What helped you or what could people have done that would have been beneficial?

You can just say "born male" or "assigned male at birth." Hope that's helpful!

Anyway, it sounds like you're already doing as much as you can to give this child a safe place to explore their interests and their gender. That will support the child and help them to best figure this out for themselves. It's unfortunate that there's not much you can do about the child's bigoted parents.

If things go badly, there may come a time where you need to call protective services on your family, or even welcome the kid into your own family if they're trans and are rejected. There's a reason that like 1/5 of all homeless kids are trans. That'd drop a nuclear bomb on family relations for sure.

I really only have the same answer for you I'd give to any parent: be there. Be loving. Be supportive. And be ready to protect the kid *fiercely*.
