Ramon Antonio Vargas Tue 7 May 2024 15.29 CEST Share A 75-year-old Missouri man strangled his wife to death in a hospital bed while claiming that he could no longer afford to pay for her ongoing kidney dialysis treatment, according to authorities.
Ronnie Wiggs has been jailed on a count of second-degree murder in connection with a femicide that starkly demonstrates how US women in general face disproportionately high levels of violence at the hands of intimate partners and family caregivers.
According to a statement that prosecutors published on Saturday, Wiggs had accompanied his wife to a hospital in Independence, Missouri, so that she could receive a new medical port device allowing her to continue undergoing kidney dialysis.
Wiggs then fatally strangled her – covering her nose and mouth to keep from screaming – while she was in bed, prosecutors and local news outlets reported.
Prosecutors allege that Wiggs left the hospital after the killing but returned when employees found his wife lifeless. Within earshot of at least one hospital staffer, Wiggs admitted, “I did it. I killed her. I choked her,” the news station KCTV reported, citing a sworn police statement filed in court.
The staffer who heard Wiggs’s confession summoned a police officer who was at the hospital to provide security. Wiggs was then arrested and taken to the Independence police department to be questioned.
There, he recounted how he killed his wife – as well as explained that he could neither take care of her nor afford her medical bills any longer, the prosecutors’ statement said.
He also acknowledged previously trying to murder his wife twice, according to the police statement reviewed by KCTV. One purported attempt – at a medical rehabilitation facility – was foiled when she woke up at an inopportune time for him. The other attempt, at the hospital, came undone for him because doctors had hooked her up to several monitors, he allegedly said to police.
Officials had not immediately released Wiggs’s wife’s name. Public records reviewed by the document suggest she was 72. |
