Gen Y and Z have more leisure time and luxury than boomers ever did. The increase in expectations and consumption is what's fueling the sentiment that young people are underperforming previous generations. Boomers bought houses on single incomes but those houses often had 3 bedrooms and 1 bathroom for a family of 5+. Dads would do most of their own handy work and fix their own cars. Mom looked after the kids and they weren't spending thousands per month on childcare. They drank cheap instant coffee and drove cheap beat up station wagons. A family with low consumption and low standards of living could pull that off on one income today but they'd look and feel poor compared to their peers stretching their credit to consume more.
