1-2 hours in my experience. Have a call with the client. Get the documents that show the breach of contract or fraud claim or whatever, draft the letter, 15-20 minutes for reviewing the right statute or locating a quick case, have the client look at it to spot incorrect things that they told you on the first call, revise it, have secretary send it out.

You always do them on contingency? Never a flat fee? There are cases that I don’t want to file, like a small biz is owed $25k, but will agree to send a demand for.

I know you're a baller and wouldn't send a demand letter for $25k but if you did would you just do a flat fee of $600 or something? Ordinary business breach of contract stuff for unpaid bills.

Sure. You can do that, but I want fewer cases. Not more capped ones. If he doesn't want $20k in a month then he can go waste someone else's time.

Nah, I'm a sucker for the underdog. I do this a lot, but it's too much of a pain to set up a new client and billing and all that, so I normally just fire off simple letters for free, and tell the client that I'll only charge them if it ends up requiring actual work.

I always discourage them and tell client I need some "teeth" if I am going to send a demand letter (you can sometimes get tied up with these if they lawyer up and you have to take phone calls on it)

But Ive done quick 1-pagers for unpaid invoices for like $250 each.
