There goes nearby ship repair and resupply as well as land-based marines. Next, US would have to keep its carriers far away to be out of range of land-based anti-ship missiles. There’s also a serious threat of subs. US can’t effectively defend Taiwan by sitting back near Guam or Diego Garcia. China can cover the entire stretch of ocean between mainland and Taiwan from shore-based installations in the mainland. The only US hope is turning Taiwan into Ukraine where shit gets totally wrecked. At this point, there will be no wars fought near the US or near China since both countries are too powerful. What I don't know is (1) how much china WANTS IT (my understanding is: quite a lot); and (2) what it's tolerance for mass death of its own citizens is.
If they had russia-level casualty tolerance -- which I doubt; no one does -- then yeah, there's not a whole lot they can't do. Just create a landbridge to taiwan with the corpses of dead mainlanders and roll your tanks over that. |
