What usually happens is someone creates a big sensation that drives a lot of early subscribers, then over time they peter out. Matt Taibbi made millions of "Twitter Files," then got MAF when Musk stopped feeding him new material. I know people with Substacks who draw money from supporters, but none of the money comes from Substack subscriptions and they hardly ever post long form shit there. some people have replicated this on substack but it's harder for readers to justify paying for the subscription. has to be in a niche where readers have $$$ to burn. and then substack skims you off the top.
and the paradox of it is precisely that the people who get hyped up for substack do so because they want to make a name for themselves based on how smart they are or how pretty their writing is, when that's not what readers want - they want concise trash that they can read in <1 minute.
it is the business of content manufacturing. becomes immediately loathsome to anyone with taste who sought out to become "notable" on substack. |
