You'll see the 7970X outperforms the 7965WX and 7975WX. It's not until the 7985WX and 7995WX that we start seeing some major differences, but at $2400 for the 7970X and almost $10,000 for the 7995WX, the choice is clear.

Zen3 vs Zen 2. You can also get stacked caches. Those haven't been explored enough by developers. The X3D chips are EPYCs that failed QC, bc the stacked cache helps in games. Dat Genoa lookin real fine:

two will be rotated vertically and placed on each side of the third, which will remain horizontal.

Your thinkpad would not be able to run those three monitors at the same time. Most laptops only allow for the connection of one or *maybe* two additional monitors.

A Lenovo docking station won't necessarily help here. If you're using an Nvidia graphics card, it depends how many DP heads you have (each displayport on your laptop is a single head). You can daisy chain multiple monitors together if your card supports MST (multi-stream transport). Check the manual for your specific card or tell me its model and I'll tell you.

What's the actual CPU model number? If it has a TB4 connector, TSINAH's GPU won't saturate it. You can literally attach the graphics card through a USB cable, and it will run just as fast as it does in TSNIAH's rig.

Very good. 11th and 12th gen are the last good mobile CPUs Intel made. They are like a Ford pushrod V8, they run hot and nasty but they do a lot of work. Hang onto it until Intel makes good chips again.

Yeah, you need dock that is certified Thunderbolt 4 and has three display connectors on back. Only one display connector should be HDMI, the other two should be Displayport. That should run three monitors plus your internal laptop display.

That's perfect. People will scoff at USB 2.0 but it's actually necessary for a lot of shit. It's actually good to have at least one USB 2.0 port available, because if the BIOS gets fried the motherboard will still detect the USB 2.0 port. Keyboards and mice will always work in USB 2.0.

Should mention that although it says "dual 4k," I think it will still run three monitors if they are lower res. The main constraint shouldn't be number of monitors you can attach, but what resolution/refresh rates they support. And 4k monitors are stupid anyway. Apple doesn't even go that high on its professional monitors.

Don't have the same PC double as a NAS. Any down time will take your NAS offline, and maintenance on the NAS will also be extra work. Get a cheap ass mini pc and put Unraid on it. Make a ZFS pool and forget it. Get a used ironwolf pro as your parity drive. I did this with a 10 bay enclosure and it solved a ton of problems.

You can also just put your GPU in a server and do everything in a GUI. You can VPN in and access your GPU from anywhere.

There's like no software for it. It's crazy that it can even run Ubuntu. However, it will let you run Nvidia and AMD workstation GPUs alongside each other, no problem. Memory bandwidth/PCI lane shit is dealt with in a much less convoluted manner than with TSNIAH's rig. The next closest thing to this in terms of architecture would be a Mac Pro, and that locks you into Apple's ecosystem.

Of course the lack of native apps shouldn't be a hassle for TSINAH. This is his opportunity to be a trailblazer. Hardly anyone on earth has a developer platform like this to fux wit

I'm considering it. However, I think the 5090's performance may actually be comparable to the A6000's despite the differences in VRAM. That's only because the 5090 uses GDDR7 (32 Gbps) while the RTX A6000 Ada uses GDDR6 (20 Gbps). That's a pretty significant speed improvement and would largely make up for the differences in VRAM.

LJL I'm not going to be training LLMs on this machine. I'll still rent H100 time for that. This is primarily for inference and some fine-tuning.

Yeah you can only do inference. The speed advantage you get with that setup vs a Macbook Pro with 92gb isn't meaningful

The difference is negligible for anything you're doing with even 48gb. You can get an M2 Ultra with 192gb of unified RAM for less than either of these systems. If we're being honest that's the shit right there. If you're coding from scratch right now you're either using Apple silicon for personal use or no one knows your name.

just realized this is meant to be a gaming pc. Thats why TSINAH needs the 5090 and the monitor.

Your system is gimped in every domain except VRAM speed. There's always going to be a memory controller of some kind bottlenecking the fuck out everything else. Any RAM that isn't soldered is slow as FUCK right now. Threadripper in particular is old, slow bus architecture.

Also, put the hard drives in a NAS. Don't make your gaming PC your NAS.

I have a separate NAS server. I just wanted "enough" storage locally.

Upgrade your server to 10Gbe. That's enough bandwidth to handle 4 hard drives doing simultaneous sequential read/writes, and I/O lag won't pin your cores.

Be aware that most 10Gbe LAN controllers will throttle down to 1Gbe if they aren't connected to anything slower than 10Gbe. Some switches can throttle down to 5 or 2.5Gbe, but that still requires you to have a NIC that runs that those speeds. Recommend avoiding Intel controllers entirely, especially the x540, which are just old server controllers someone put on a new PCB.

TSINAH here's one reason why you shouldn't be putting hard drives in a computer you intend to use to do anything else:

https://imgur.com/a/4Y5Sn6L

That's a realistic estimate of how long it takes to preclear a disk for a ZFS pool. Guess what happens if you have to reboot while that's going on. And 14tb isn't even that big by modern standards, it's actually the smallest drive in my array. I have 3x 20tb drives that each took over 20 hours to preclear, and I still have several more drives waiting in the queue.

Of course you don't need to do this if you're running RAID, but RAID is pure shit. There's no integrity checking to look for inconsistencies between mirrored drives. Instead the system waits for a SMART report that never comes. For that matter, even if an inconsistency is discovered, the RAID controller doesn't know which disk has the corrupted files. You can't just tell the RAID controller to make an educated guess.

ZFS pools solve all these problems and more, but maintenance may require the server to stay online for days at a time. Parity checks on 20tb hard drives take minimum 24 hours.

14k for a loud/very hot PC with maintenance issues that's going to be 1k after 5 years. This is like an AMG Mercedes, but if you have fun with it, why not?

Same way a boring Lexus will be easier to deal with than a fun Mercedes AMG for ordinary tasks in the long-run, writing optimized code for stable & lower-powered, but still relatively higher-end hardware will be easier to deal with in the long-run.

TSINAH if you are actually going to connect a monitor to this thing, consider using one of these as your primary display card so the 5090 can be passed to a VM without issue.

https://imgur.com/a/afZtJbl

Here what that card does for you:

1. gives you a media engine that's just as advanced as the one in the 5090, and also higher quality. NVENC is fast but the quality sucks so bad that people avoid it by default.

2. it only takes up one PCI slot, and it can be the slowest one on the board. It could be PCIe 4x or whatever, it doesn't matter

3. it doesn't require external power. It draws all its juice out of the PCIe slot like a video card from 1991.
